Turns Out Big Brother Wasn’t Cancelled, and You Can Apply for 2023 Right Now
Recently, rumours were swirling that Big Brother Australia had been cancelled due to low ratings, after a source told the So Dramatic! podcast that Channel 7 had given the series the axe.
“The new head of reality TV at Channel 7 cancelled it,” a source had told the So Dramatic! podcast recently. “Endemol [production company] was already in production and already coming up with ideas.”
“They have already purchased the licensing rights for next year, and they are still not commissioning it even though they’ve forked out big to licence it,” they added. “So, they’ve wasted millions and millions.”
Now, Channel 7 has put out a casting call for the 2023 season, seemingly confirming that the reality competition series will be going ahead as planned, after all.
Over the course of Big Brother Royalty Vs New Contenders, we asked the OG housemates for their best advice about auditioning for Big Brother Australia.
2013 winner Tim Dormer stressed that the most important thing is to “be yourself”.
“You can try and pretend and trick the producers but they’re very good at sniffing out when you’re pretending to be something you’re not,” Dormer explained. “You can’t keep that up for three months anyway, if you get in the house.”
He continued: “Find what makes you unique. What’s something that’s really interesting about you, or your life, or what you do, and make sure you tell the producers that. Make sure you aren’t afraid to speak your mind, and at the end of the day, have fun!
“You’re making a TV show, don’t forget that we’re watching and make it fun,” he added. “Think ‘what would Tim do?!’”
Tully Smyth, on the other hand, said “don’t try to be like Tim”.
She explained: “Don’t try to be the loudest in the room, don’t try to be the funniest, don’t try to be like Tim, don’t try to be like anyone else, literally just be yourself, and then buckle up.”
Smyth added: “Be prepared, grow some thick skin because it’s definitely not easy! There are highs and lows but it is honestly the best experience, I feel so damn lucky that I got to do it twice. I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat.”
Meanwhile, Farmer Dave Graham was enthusiastic, telling Big Brother Australia hopefuls “do it, do it, do it, because it will change your life forever”.
“More people have climbed Mount Everest than have been inside the Big Brother house, and it will change you for the better,” he explained. “It’ll develop an understanding of self like no other experience that you could ever have on this planet.”
For people interested in applying to Big Brother Australia for the 2023 season, here are some ground rules:
• You must be 18 years of age or over by 31st June 2022
• You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
• You must be available for one day between 19th and 30th of September 2022 for a potential audition with the show’s producers
• You must be available for approximately five-to-seven weeks for the shoot. At this stage, shooting will commence approximately late October 2022 and run through November 2022
Interestingly, the application is specifically calling for future housemates to be single, which may be some indicator of the theme for next season, but there’s no official word on that just yet.
How to Apply for Big Brother Australia 2023
First up, you’ll complete your application form, which is split into a series of different sections. This is so the producers can get to know a bit about who you are, what your deal is, your background. It should only take about 15-20 minutes to complete.
The most important section, however, is the video application, which is a short video you’ll make that displays your personality to the producers, and shows them why you’re the perfect person for them to put in the house.
It’s important to note that applications will close at 5pm AEST on Sunday, September 10, 2022, and the casting page notes “the sooner the better!” in regards to getting your applications in.
From there, it’s all a waiting game. If your application is successful — or if the producers need anymore information from you — you’ll hear from them, but they ask that you don’t contact the casting team for any status updates. Patience is a virtue, friends!
If you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next big name in Big Brother Australia history, what are you waiting for? Submit your application today.
