“MasterChef Australia” is about to get a whole lot sweeter as the incredibly talented pastry chef, Kay-Lene Tan, steps into the spotlight as a guest judge.
She’s here to test the skills of four contestants competing for the shiny, sought-after immunity pin. But there’s a twist – tea must be a star ingredient in both the contestants’ and Kay-Lene’s dishes, and the contestants have an extra 15 minutes to cook up their culinary masterpieces.
Kay-Lene Tan will soon find herself on the flip side as she is set to compete on “MasterChef Australia: Dessert Masters“. She’s vying for the prestigious title of Australia’s first-ever Dessert Master. And she’s up against some top competitors, including Reynold Poernomo and Adriano Zumbo.
Who Is Kay-Lene Tan?
With a background that includes training under the renowned chef Joël Robuchon, Kay-Lene has had the opportunity to work her pastry magic in some of the most prestigious and mouthwatering restaurants across the globe. As an Executive Pastry Chef, she offers a unique blend of experience and passion for creating desserts that not only tantalise the taste buds, but also evoke memories and tell captivating stories.
Currently, Kay-Lene holds the impressive title of Head Pastry Chef at Tonka and Coda Restaurants, where she crafts desserts that take diners on a nostalgic journey through her past. Her love for blending traditional and contemporary flavours from her childhood — combined with a dedication to old-school cooking techniques that require finesse and precision — shines through in every delightful creation she presents.
But how did Kay-Lene’s journey in the pastry world begin? Well, it all started after completing her formal training when she had the extraordinary opportunity to work alongside the legendary Chef Joël Robuchon. No big deal, but he’s been celebrated as the “Chef of the Century” by the esteemed French restaurant guide, Gault Millau. It was under his guidance that Kay-Lene’s talent blossomed. From there, she collaborated with acclaimed chefs like Jason Atherton and Andres Lara. However, it was her recognition as the recipient of the Hostplus Hospitality Scholarship that truly catapulted her career, opening doors for her to work alongside Chef Dominique Crenn and Chef Juan Contreas at Atelier Crenn in San Francisco.
With over a decade of experience under her belt, Kay-Lene has amassed an impressive collection of awards and accolades. In 2015, she was the first runner-up for the San Pellegrino Young Chef of the Year award in the Pacific region. And in 2017, she continued her winning streak by proudly taking home the prestigious Rising Star Award at FoodService Magazine’s Women in Food Service awards.
