The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted the biggest fashion event of the year on May 1, and Kendall Jenner arrived sans pants. Completely intentional, Jenner’s ensemble was as much of an homage to the no-pants trend as it was to Karl Lagerfeld, the inspiration behind this year’s fashion exhibit.
As one of Lagerfeld’s former models, Jenner is no stranger to the designer’s aesthetic. Paying tribute to the late fashion giant, she wore a high-cut bodysuit with a prominent white collar. The pressed collar, a constant in Lagerfeld’s wardrobe, was embellished with hundreds of sparkling crystals, beautifully breaking up the monochrome look and mirroring the lining of her floor-length sleeves. Her sequined bodysuit, designed by Marc Jacobs, also featured a high-cut waist. She styled the statement-making outfit with floral earrings and a sky-high pair of lace-up platform boots – embellished with glitter to keep the shimmering theme going from head to toe.
In selecting Jenner’s look, celebrity stylist Marni Senofonte – who’s responsible for four of the model’s past Met Gala outfits – took inspiration from Lagerfeld’s life and most striking silhouettes. “I used Pinterest to pull inspiration from every aspect of Karl’s life, from his homes, hobbies, the cars he drove to his collections of fans, gloves, ascots, and jewelry,” Senofonte said in a statement. “I even delved into his personal relationships. I had a vision in mind and Pinterest for me was the perfect creative companion – opening my eyes to things I wasn’t even looking for! We found ourselves considering silhouettes I’d never done with Kendall before.”
Ahead of the momentous night in fashion, Jenner joined her sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner in taking a shot to prepare for the red carpet. Kardashian looked stunning in a naked illusion dress by Schiaparelli draped in pearls and a set of supermodel nails. Kylie completed their sibling style moment in a custom Jean Paul Gaultier gown with a thigh-high slit and a billowing cape.
