The 2023 Met Gala was an event to remember, and not just for the usual extravagant fashion statements. This year’s theme, ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A line of beauty’, brought about an unusual trend that had never been seen before.
Celebrities Doja Cat and Jared Leto took to the carpet in cat-inspired ensembles, channelling the late fashion icon’s feline companion, Choupette.
Doja Cat’s look was nothing short of impressive, with cat-like prosthetics that transformed her face into that of Choupette’s. Her Oscar De La Renta gown, encrusted with jewels and featuring a feathered train, was also complete with a hood that covered her hair, adorned with cat ears. She even sported claw-like nails to complete the feline look.

Jared Leto’s take on the trend, on the other hand, was a life-size cat costume that completely covered his identity. The actor’s arrival at the event sparked speculation as to who was underneath the costume, leaving spectators guessing until he removed the headpiece midway up the Met steps.
Both celebrities’ interpretations of the theme paid tribute to the extravagance that surrounded Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette.

Meanwhile, rapper Lil Nas X only responded to reporters only with “meows” when asked about their cat look. In a daring fashion statement, Lil Nas X literally wore only a metallic thong and was adorned with shimmering silver body paint and an abundance of crystals and pearls that glistened from head to toe.

To complement this already bold ensemble, they donned a matching bejewelled eye mask and manicure, taking the look to the next level.
Choupette was no ordinary feline. She lived a life of unparalleled luxury as Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved companion, as reported by The New York Times.
Her privileged lifestyle included flying on private planes, having her own iPad, and indulging in a diet of gourmet pâté and croquettes, served on a designer Goyard dish.
