Fashionable minds think alike. At the 2023 Met Gala, actor Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang – a filmmaker and editor in chief of Vogue China – unexpectedly wore custom versions of the same 1983 Chloé dress. Wilde arrived in a stark-white version of the backless gown, aptly called the “violin dress” for its deep side cutouts and gold embellishments on the bodice. Zhang’s rendition featured the exact same silhouette, cap sleeves, and violin detail, just in a dark navy-blue fabric, paying tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld. Her gown also included additional glittery gold filigree along the hem and a long cape that trailed behind her on the red carpet.
Styled by Karla Welch, Wilde kept her look relatively simple. She wore flared gold arm cuffs in the same pattern as the violin on her dress, drop earrings, and a matching gold clutch. On the other side of the spectrum, Zhang’s accessories gave her look a more avant-garde feel, posing in dark sunglasses, adding a longer skirt, and wearing bright blue hair.
While the two likely didn’t plan to twin, the fact that they could both have such different interpretations of the same design is a true testament to the versatility of the Chloé dress. Whether elegant and understated like Wilde or cool and edgy like Zhang, both stars did the design justice in their own way. Read on to see their individual looks and find out which one is your personal favorite.
