I mean, just look at Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson. Anwar Hadid and Dua Lipa.
Some of our all-time favourite celebrity couples have started their relationships via an Instagram DM, and, TBH, it’s so relatable.
Don’t you remember the good ol’ days of adding someone you had a crush on but were too scared to talk to on Facebook, and then spending the next three weeks messaging them into the wee hours of the night?
Approaching someone you think is cute online is the gift that keeps on giving. Even if they’re not into you romantically, you can still have a good conversation. And they know who you are now, right?
Just take Lizzo and Chris Evans. It started with a drunk DM, then progressed to happy birthday messages and a fake pregnancy, and we’re living for it! Although we don’t think these two will be getting into a romantic relationship anytime soon, they’ve created some excellent content for us all at home and a newfound friendship and we ship to the stars.
We’re not always attracted to people because we want to date them. We might see someone and think damn, they’re cute AF, and yeah, you might want to have sex with them, but sometimes the people we’re into turn out to be some of our closest friends.
This is exactly what’s happened between pop icon Demi Lovato and Schitt’s Creek‘s Emily Hampshire.
Demi posted a snippet of their latest podcast episode – 4D with Demi Lovato – to Instagram yesterday, which featured a snippet of conversation that revealed that they’d DM’d Emily and asked her out on a date. Safe to say, the internet lost its mind over this potential romance.
“You slid in my DMs and you said, ‘Hey girl, I like you on the show. We should kick it sometime’. And then you said below it, ‘And by kick it, I mean go on a date. I find you attractive.’ You made it clear it was a date. And I loved that because I was like, ‘Sometimes that’s confusing’ … I’m decades older than you, so ‘kick it’, I was looking it up,” Emily revealed.
She also said Demi had made the comparison to Holland Taylor, 78, and Sarah Paulson, 46, in relation to their age difference. Demi is 29 and Emily is 40.
“You also said, ‘Think of Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor.’ And then right after you were like, ‘I don’t mean you’re the Holland Taylor!’ I thought it was the funniest thing in the whole world because I was a Holland Taylor in that situation. Proud to be,” Emily added.
They didn’t end up going out, but Emily alludes to the fact that this has to do with their age gap.
“I wish you weren’t 29!” she says.
But Demi doesn’t regret sending the DM.
“What’s the worst that could happen?” they ask.
“I made a really good friend. I mean, you’re a dope friend.” Demi tells Emily on the podcast.
We totally agree, Demi. You miss 100% of the chances you don’t take.
