They first tied the knot on the dating reality show Married At First Sight in front of the country, then Martha Kalifatidis, 30, and Michael Brunelli, 31, announced they were getting married for real in December last year. Now, nine months later the pair have announced they are expecting their first baby together.
Sharing the news in an Instagram video on Monday night, Martha captions the short clip with: “It’s time we explained our absence. Thank you to everyone that has reached out to us, we really do appreciate it.”
In the video, Michael begins: “It’s been a minute since we’ve been online so we wanted to explain our situation and make a little bit of an announcement and that is that Martha is pregnant. It hasn’t exactly been…”
Before Martha took over to say: “It hasn’t been like this exciting, wonderful time for us. I feel like, I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining. Like we are so excited. We are so happy. It was a complete surprise.”
Martha went on to explain that at five weeks she was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).
“[It’s] basically like severe chronic nausea and vomiting it’s like with no relief. It is like 24/7,” she explains. “I literally did not get out of bed for two months. I was so sick. I could not eat or drink anything. There were days I didn’t even get up to pee. We’ve just been in and out of the emergency room and hospital.”
“But you know, here in Melbourne I’m seeing an amazing doctor and she has given me some medication that has literally been life changing. So it is helping me to feel human again and to start moving around again. So here we are.”
Martha explains she wanted to share the news with her following but “it’s hard, it’s one of those things” she continues.
Michael adds: “It was also too early to share it so we kind of just had to disappear offline. Give a couple of excuses and there were a lot of people who were concerned so if you did message us thank you we do truly appreciate it, hopefully now you can relax.”
The pair first met in 2019 on the controversial show where strangers get “married” to one another and are required to work through problems.
After their stint on the show, the duo have become somewhat of a power couple, staying by each other’s side through thick and thin. Martha has since become a prolific influencer and has even appeared on other reality shows such as Celebrity Apprentice.
