The Biggest Moments, Snubs and Surprises From the 2023 Logie Awards

It’s television’s night of nights once again. That’s right, folks! The Logies 2023 are here, and what a night it was! The who’s who of Australian television gathered at The Star in Sydney tonight to celebrate the grandest event in the industry.

Australia’s finest came together to recognise all the outstanding moments in Aussie TV over the year. And of course, there was plenty of glitz, glamour, and triumph along the way, as well. The excitement in the air was palpable, and we couldn’t help but soak in the joy, excitement, and heartfelt moments of the evening.

Here are all the biggest, most iconic moments — as well as the biggest snubs and surprises — from the 2023 Logie Awards.

Sam Pang’s Opening Monologue

Comedian Sam Pang hosted the show, and kicked off the evening with a hilarious monologue. In his speech, he playfully roasted everyone in the room, including himself and Channel 7. He began by pointing out that he is one of the only Asian people on Channel 7, before running through a list of celebs who turned down the gig before the network offered it to him.

From there, it was an opening monologue reminiscent of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes, and no one was safe, as Pang came for everyone from Hamish Blake to the cast of “Married At First Sight“.

On the other hand, the crowd at home were eating it up.

“Crazy Fun Park” Wins Most Outstanding Children’s Program

In what was perhaps the biggest upset of the evening, ABC’s “Crazy Fun Park” won the award for Most Outstanding Children’s Program, beating out longtime favourite “Bluey”.

“Bluey” is a globally beloved children’s program, and viewers were shocked that it didn’t take home the win. On Twitter, “Bluey” quickly began trending as people voiced their opinions. In fact, even the “Crazy Fun Park” team didn’t expect to win — they even opened their acceptance speech with an apology.

Amy Shark Wins “Best New Talent” Over “Heartbreak High” Actors

Amy Shark graced the stage of the 63rd Annual Logie Awards to perform her new single, “Can I Shower At Yours”. The singer was also up for the “Best New Talent”, an award she won for her work as a judge on “Australian Idol“.

Shark was up against some stiff competition for the award. The other nominees included Ayesha Madon and Chloe Hayden from “Heartbreak High“, Lilliana Bowrey from “Surviving Summer”, Kween Kong from “RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under”, and Flex Mami from “Love Island Australia”.

Shark was visibly shocked to win, and gave her fellow nominees a shout out in her acceptance speech. Shark wasn’t the only one who was shocked, though. Many viewers at home felt that Shark, who has been an established musician for years, shouldn’t have qualified for the award, despite this being her first TV role. Others felt that the award should have gone to one of the actors nominated.

Ray Meagher Goes Missing During Tribute

Sam Pang took time to congratulate Ray Meagher on 35 years on “Home and Away“, and to announce that Meagher had just signed on for five more years on the long-running soap opera. The only problem? Meagher was nowhere to be found during the segment.

Pang half-joked that the segment “would probably be better if he was here”, as the camera panned over the audience. From the stage, Pang asked if anyone knew where he was, and the cast seated at the “Home and Away” table shrugged helplessly.

It all turned out okay in the end, though, as Meagher returned to his table at the very end of the segment.

Abbie Chatfield and Joel Creasey Present Most Popular Lifestyle Program

Aussie media faves Abbie Chatfield and Joel Creasey teamed up to present the award for Most Popular Lifestyle Program. During the segment, the pair poked fun at their public personas, with Creasey kicking things off with “I’m @joelcreasey across all social media platforms”, while Chatfield added, “and I’m overexposed, in every meaning of the word”. The duo went on to say that they wanted to dispel rumours that they’d “attend the opening of an envelope”, before pointing out that they were, in fact, there to celebrate the opening of an envelope.

Before they announced “Travel Guides” as the winner, Chatfield dropped the bombshell of a lifetime.

“I’m actually having a really fun night,” she jokingly admitted.

“No one’s actually said that at the Logies before,” Joel quipped in return.

The In Memoriam Segment for Shows

Directly following the emotional In Memoriam segment, which paid tribute to all the Australian stars we’ve lost over the year — including Olivia Newton-John and Jock Zonfrillo — Sam Pang returned to the stage.

After asking the crowd for their attention for a serious moment, Pang went on to offer his own In Memoriam segment… to all the shows that failed to capture the nation’s heart this year.

Kicking things off, Pang paid tribute to “Rush“, noting that while it only ended last week and its cancellation has not been confirmed yet, it was surely coming. Ooft!

But Pang wasn’t done. He then turned his attention to “Blow Up“, the show about balloon animals that quickly got moved to 7 Mate, and then “The Real Love Boat“, Network 10’s “‘Love Island’ on a boat” dating reality show.

Sonia Kruger Wins the Gold Logie

Finally, it all came down to the Gold Logie, the most prestigious award of the night! Sonia Kruger, the veritable queen of Channel 7 as host of “The Voice”, Dancing With the Stars” and “Big Brother Australia” took home the prize, and was thrilled and stunned to accept the Gold.

“Thank you so much! I cannot, I cannot, I cannot,” Sonia began her speech, before composing herself.

Sonia took time to acknowledge her fellow nominees as “incredible”. She was up against 2022 Gold Logie winner Hamish Blake, as well as Julia Morris, Leigh Sales, Mark Coles Smith, Osher Günsberg and Shaun Micallef. Her win marks the first time a woman has won the Gold Logie since Carrie Bickmore in 2015.

Sonia went on to deliver a playful, sweet speech, in which she noted that she would be sending out apology letters to everyone she’d forgotten tomorrow.

As she wrapped up, she added: “Go and party, have a good time, thank you, thank you, thank you!”
