When it comes to finding a star, “Australian Idol” judge Harry Connick Jnr is looking for the whole package. The looks. The voice. And, of course, the swagger (aka marketability). His experience judging the US instalment of “Idol” from 2013 to 2016 only scratches the surface of his 30-year career within the entertainment industry. Grammy and Emmy wins, Tony nominations and millions of records sold, the man has done it all and left no crumbs.
From a young age, the multi-talented artist grew up with music in constant reach much like his co-judge, Meghan Trainor. He names jazz musicians, Ellis Marsalis and James Booker as his biggest early influences. Having worked with many notable names across television, film and music — Connick has seen it all. And when asked about advice for contestants moving from auditions to live shows, he keeps it simple;
“Keep tapping into who you are.”
Connick is a sucker for the “Idol” format and raved about the classic and simple format of the franchise, claiming in press interviews that “no show does it better”. His experience across the show will surely serve him and the contestants well as he continues to be impressed by the range of talent he has witnessed so far. But don’t be mistaken, he isn’t afraid to speak his mind and give his opinion on who’s in front of him.
As the creator of Piano Party, Connick knows a thing or two about bringing the party to the stage. As for plans to expand the accessibility of the platform to Australia, he subtly hints at welcoming Aussies to the community in the near future.
We can’t wait to see the energy he brings to the judging panel and the Golden Ticket-worthy contestants he picks this season.
Tune in on Channel 7 and 7plus. Let’s see if Connick can find the next Australian Idol.
