Rihanna looked like a work of art from head to toe at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10. The multihyphenate star made her surprise debut at the award show wearing an updo as head-turning as her dramatic puff-sleeved Schiaparelli gown. Hairstylist Yusef Williams styled her hair into two structural buns she described as “Princess-Leia-meets-Hollywood-meets-Wakanda,” he told Vogue.
To achieve the regal look, Williams wove wires through two braids to maintain the desired shape and then layered twisted hair on top of each braid to create a smooth finish. “At first she was like, ‘OK, I don’t wanna look like Princess Leia,’ but in the end, we were like, ‘But what’s wrong with Princess Leia? She was f*cking fierce,'” he said. The finishing touch? A thin sliver of bangs curved into a C shape à la the late Hollywood icon Josephine Baker. We wouldn’t be surprised if this hairstyle becomes A Thing™ this award season.
Rihanna, whose “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” track “Lift Me Up” was nominated for the best original song award, went subtle with the rest of her Golden Globes beauty look. Makeup artists Priscilla Ono and Yvette Evora gave the new mom a glowy look with light pink eyeshadow, blush along her cheekbones, and rosy lip gloss – using all Fenty Beauty products, naturally.
Other standout beauty moments of the night included Natasha Lyonne’s edgy “jellyfish” ponytail, Emma D’Arcy’s new midnight-blue hair color, and the many “balletcore” buns worn by stars like Li Jun Li, Bailey Bass, and Kaley Cuoco. Read ahead for an all-angles look at Rihanna’s gravity-defying updo at the show.
