The *Actual* (Beauty) Winners of the 2023 Oscars

Remember last year’s Academy Awards? There was a lot going on. But nothing could distract us from one of the most exciting elements of any awards: red carpet beauty.

Following two years of COVID-cancelled red carpets and virtual awards, celebrities brought their beauty A-game to the 2022 Oscars. All that pent-up energy made for some outstanding looks. The red carpet was full of hair, makeup, and manicure slays. Had these stars been working on their looks for two years? Maybe! Either way, thirsty beauty-loving onlookers were served 12 months of beauty inspiration in one go.

Now, it’s time for a second serving of red carpet glamour with the best Oscars beauty looks of 2023 rolling in. But firstly, here are our favourite moments from last year’s ceremony.

One trend we saw on the red carpet last year was celebrities bringing monochromatic tones to their beauty looks, keying them closely to their couture gowns. Plus, plenty of updos.

Tati Gabrielle wore a soft ivory floor-length gown created in collaboration with HELLESY using TENCEL biodegradable fabrics. Gabrielle’s platinum blonde, braided updo and eye makeup featuring gold leaf inner corner accents made an otherwise neutral beauty look pop. The look was 1920s glamour with a youthful twist.

Then, there was Tracee Ellis Ross, wearing a classic Carolina Herrera gown with a plunging sweetheart neckline and a classic diamond necklace from fine jewellery brand Niwaka. Ross’ beauty look was a masterclass in restraint, with crisp red lips, a clean eye look and fresh skin, and a sweeping, Hepburn-esque updo. It was a minimalist approach that emphasized the 1950s glamour of the gown, while keeping things fresh, modern, and not too costumey.

No red carpet is complete without Zendaya, and she was the breakout, flawless face of the 2022 Oscars. Our recently minted $1 million-dollar episode “Euphoria” star had us hoping she charges less for her beauty services when she revealed she did her own makeup for the ceremony and the afterparty. Zendaya wore Valentino Couture with a cropped silk collared blouse and a silver skirt with a train, paired with snaking Serpentis diamond jewellery. Brushed brows, a glistening silver smokey eye, and a plush, glossy lip perfectly complimented the look — along with a chrome, silvery manicure. She nonchalantly posted on Instagram, “every now and then I do my own beat,” leaving us wondering if there’s anything she can’t do.

We’re on the edge of our seats to find out what beauty look our girl turns out for this year’s Academy Awards red carpet.

What will this year hold? So far, the beauty looks are all about a smokey eye paired with a bold red lip or a dark neutral shade. But we’ve also seen a more minimalistic make-up look dominating the carpet as well. And it’s the same with hair – celebrities have either opted for an undone natural blowout over a super-styled look or an updo with something a little different such as braids, a double bun or if you’re Florence Pugh, a faux fringe.
