Choosing a foundation can be tricky, given the many variables. You have to consider things like skin type, the shade range offered, whether you want sheer coverage versus something more medium to full. Once you land on a foundation that suits all these needs, you usually stick with it.
So, what do you do if you haven’t found your favourite foundation just yet? Well, apart from going into a store and trying a bunch, recommendations are your best bet. Taking a peek into someone’s makeup bag is helpful as you’re guaranteed to receive honest reviews on all of their most-used products.
With this in mind, we asked our team to reveal their most loved foundations. Our team has a variety of skin types, tones and needs when it comes to base products, so the below recommendations are diverse. Keep reading to see what the POPSUGAR Australia team reach for.
Lyndsey, Entertainment Editor: Dior Backstage Airflash Foundation ($94)
I love it because it is easy to use, gives great coverage but never feels heavy or greasy on my skin. It also gives my skin a nice glow!
Amanda, Publisher: Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint ($68)
I love that it’s a serum and glides on for sheer coverage. I feel like it covers imperfections but my skin still looks and feels like skin. Plus, it’s SPF 40 (but I still wear my Ultra Violette 50+ underneath!)
Basmah, Entertainment Producer: Estée Lauder Double Wear Makeup ($60)
I’ve been using it for 10 years now and nothing else compares. It provides coverage without being overly cakey, and it stays on my oily skin all day. They also have a great range of shades for different undertones which is important to me because nothing is worse than a bad colour match!
Valentina, Managing Editor: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation ($67)
I have combo/oily skin and this formula doesn’t leave me feeling like an oil slick. I like that it’s easy to apply with your hands and gives even coverage. It has a nice consistency and lasts throughout the day. I like that it feels like a second skin and gives my skin a natural glow, it’s not heavy and doesn’t cake.
Sangeeta, Lifestyle Editor: Cover FX Natural Finish Foundation ($65)
I love it because it’s light but still covers my pimples and any dark spots and also doesn’t look cakey.
Alexandra, Beauty & Wellness Editor: IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better™ CC+™ Cream SPF 50 ($63)
I have super dry skin (even with all of the thick night creams and hyaluronic acid serums I use and the excessive amount of water I drink — genetics are great, right?), so I’m all about a hydrating base product. That’s why I love the IT Cosmetics CC Cream as it’s packed with hydrating ingredients and doesn’t crease or sit in fine lines or pores.
This baby subtly blurs the skin and offers great coverage — it achieves the perfect balance between covering blemishes but giving a your-skin-but-better look. Despite the SPF50+ protection, I still use sunscreen underneath it (either Mecca Cosmetica’s To Save Face Superscreen or Ultra Violette’s Supreme Screen, which are both SPF50+) as makeup doesn’t provide adequate sun protection.
