Wayne Carey Opens Up About the Sex Scandal That Ruined His Life on SAS Australia
The countdown to SAS Australia is on, and Channel 7 have been slowly giving us previews into what we can expect in the upcoming season. One of the celebrity contestants this year is AFL legend Wayne Carey, who, in a preview for the show, is called a “train wreck” by the directing staff. Clearly, we’re off to a great start already.
The athlete was embroiled in a sex scandal in 2002 when he was exposed for sleeping with his close friend and former teammate Anthony Stevens’ wife. He and Kelli Stevens were caught together in a toilet at fellow AFL star Glenn Archer’s home during a party, and from that moment, his life came spiralling down.
The illicit relationship affected Carey’s marriage and speaking candidly on SAS Australia, he’s claimed it has “haunted” him for the last 20 years.
“I’m not trying to prove anything to the public, it’s to myself,” Wayne says in the clip. “People can change, they evolve. Hopefully, this can help me.
Nicknamed “The King”, the footy player turned commentator is seen facing his biggest fears in the explosive new promo.
“My worst nightmare would be standing at the top of a mountain,” he says, while shown scaling the cliff face of a thunderous 80-metre-high waterfall.
It seems Carey is ready to face the scandal head-on, but SAS Australia drillmaster Ollie Ollerton didn’t seem too impressed.
“This guy is a train wreck,” says Ollerton as multiple headlines involving Carey appear on the screen.
Carey is one of 17 Aussie celebs embarking on a life-altering experience, where former SAS soldiers subject them to physical and psychological tests from the real SAS selection process.
Completely cut off from the outside world, the famous personalities will be stripped of their plush lifestyles and will be required to eat, sleep and train together in tough conditions.
Returning to guide the recruits is Chief Instructor Ant Middleton and Directing Staff Ollie Ollerton. Joining them for the very first time will be retired US Navy SEAL Clint Emerson and former British Special Forces soldier Dean Stott.
SAS Australia premieres in February on Channel 7 and 7plus.
