Everything We Learned About Pokémon Scarlet and Violet From the New Trailer
Last night’s Pokémon Presents livestream was an info dump on all things Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. We saw a new trailer and learned more about how multiplayer works in Scarlet and Violet, the return of gym battles and the series’ new gimmick: crystal Pokémon.
There were also updates on Pokémon Go, Pokémon Unite, Pokémon Masters EX and Pokémon Cafe Remix. You can watch the full Pokémon Presents stream here if you want to learn more about these games, but below we’ve broken down everything we learned about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon
Scarlet and Violet‘s Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon will be available at the start of the game and they’ll act as mounts to help you traverse the open world. They can change form to dash on land, swim through water and glide through the air, so our dreams of riding our Flying-type Pokémon will finally come true!
Terastal Pokémon
The mysterious Terastal phenomenon is the new gimmick in Scarlet and Violet, like Gigantamax Pokémon in Sword and Shield or Alpha Pokémon in Arceus. Instead of transforming your Pokémon into huge versions of themselves, the Terastal phenomenon makes Pokémon shine like gems, boosting their type and making their moves stronger.
The exact effect terrastallising a Pokémon has will depend on their Tera Type. An Eevie, for instance, would normally remain Normal-type after terrastalising, but you can find an Eevie with a Grass or Water Tera Type. And yes, there are Pokémon with rare Tera Types for you to collect.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Multiplayer
In a series first, Scarlet and Violet will support four-player co-op. You’ll summon friends to join your game at Union Circle and your group can then go out to explore the open world and battle Pokémon together.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Battles
After they were absent from Arceus, gym battles are returning in Scarlet and Violet. To fit in with the freedom of the open world, you can complete all eight gyms in whatever order you like.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Tera Raids
Raids are returning in Scarlet and Violet, with some changes that will be especially pleasing for people who team up with random players or AI. Raid battles are still turn-based, but you can now attack or heal based on your own timing, without waiting for your allies to finish their turn.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Academies
You’ll start the game as a student at either Naranja Academy (Pokémon Scarlet) or Uva Academy (Pokémon Violet) where you’ll take part in a “special independent study” called The Treasure Hunt. The Treasure Hunt will be your reason to explore the world and will be made up of three storylines. One storyline is the gym battles, and the other two are being kept secret for now.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Pre-Order Bonuses
Anyone who pre-orders Scarlet and Violet before the November 18 release date will receive a special in-game Pikachu who can fly.
If you download the digital version of the games from the Nintendo eShop by February 28, 2023, you’ll also receive the Adventure Set, which contains a chunky selection of potions, revives and candy to help you on your journey.
Finally, if you buy the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet dual pack, you’ll receive 100 Poké Balls in each game.
