Winter isn’t the best season for going out, is it? Wind chill, icy temperatures and a serious lack of coat checks in Australia mean you’re either going out seriously under-dressed for the weather, or bunching up a really nice coat on the dance floor and hoping for the best.

Look, we’re not going to lie – you might have to deal with bunched-up coats on dance floors, but at least we’ve got some top tips on how to stay warm, look great and not deal with dry cleaning bills all winter while still enjoying a great party or night out.

Buy a Coat That Can Stand Some Wear And Tear

A coat made of a durable material that can handle some spilled drinks is key if you’re in a state that doesn’t really have coat checks. Avoid suede, for starters, and if you’ve got a leather jacket or blazer, definitely waterproof it regularly so it can be cleaned easily. If you’re going dancing, try faux fur or pleather over natural materials, as they can be wiped down or spot-washed easily. If you’re going out with the suede or leather, turn the jacket inside out before sitting down — that way, if you spill anything, it will affect the lining, not the outer.

Minimalist Faux Fur Jacket

It might be expensive, but this faux fur jacket by Ena Pelly ($349) is black (tick) and easy to clean (tick), made with recycled polyester making it really warm for those chilly nights. It’s also super versatile — throw over a mini dress for party drama, or team with jeans and a nice top for a dinner out.

Faux Leather Blazer

This jacket from Princess Polly ($115) has heaps of positive reviews on site, with one buyer saying “Absolutely love the fact that although it is oversized, the tailoring on this blazer is so flattering! Fits like a glove.” It’s easy to wipe clean, and can handle a big night out. Many say to size up for an oversized fit, FYI.

Wear Boots

Boots are going to give some serious warmth to a part of your body that feels it most — your feet. Not only are they one of the most comfortable footwear options, you won’t be dealing with frozen toes all night. The right boots will work back with dressier outfits like silk and velvet — go for black leather and definitely opt for a heel.

Alana Boots

These stylish black leather boots by Alias Mae ($299.95) are the wardrobe staple you need if jeans rule your life. The high ankle cut sits well with both long and cropped denim, and the eleven centimetre heel will give you height, but the flared block style gives stability, too.

Justice Boots

Tony Bianco make great boots, and the Justice style ($279.95) is so comfortable and perfect for any party girl. The elasticated sides make slipping them on and off super easy, while the chunky six centimetre block heel is supported by a platform sole for extra comfort.

Slinky Tops and Jeans Are a Winter Party Uniform

Silky, slinky long-sleeve blouses teamed with some great jeans are a winter uniform, and will keep you cool on a dance floor, but feel winter-appropriate at dinner or drinks. Alternatively, go super-sexy with a fitted mesh top and a bra you want to show off.

Dorothy Long Sleeve Top

Bec + Bridge’s current collection is filled with great going-out tops, like the Dorothy Knit Skivvy ($220), a slinky, sheer piece with tasteful mesh covered cutouts. Pair back with black high-waisted jeans or a leather mini and some chunky boots.

Fleetwood Shirt

If you’re heading out to a nice dinner instead of the club, the Fleetwood Shirt by Petal + Pup ($99) is a total winner. Floaty sleeves and fun pops of colour, it looks great with black and blue denim alike.

Black Jeans Always Work

A pair of great black jeans will get you through winter parties easily. Team with heeled boots and one of the blouses mentioned above, and you’re set – throw on a big coat for warmth, if you’re bracing the elements. We love black flares or wide leg jeans, but you can’t go past a great pair of straight legs with stilettos, either.

Eastcoast Flare

Rolla’s Eastcoast Flares ($159.95) were one of the first flare style jeans in the Australian market, and remain one of the best. They come in loads of colourways, but we love the Velvet Black for winter party nights — a soft, velvety fabric that sits comfortably on the mid-waist and flatters curves with its flared leg.

Wide Leg Cropped Jeans

With 5-star reviews and on Glasson’s website, these Wide Leg Cropped Jeans ($59.99) are a solid buy for anyone looking for black denim with a slightly relaxed fit. “A “must-have” pair of denim pants. It’s just amazing,” one reviewer raved. “Extremely flattering and fit perfectly. My new go to pants.”
