One of the most beloved woman characters to come out of the “Bridgerton” series is Queen Charlotte, from her elaborate plans to unveil the identity of the elusive Lady Whistledown to her immaculate fashion sense. Now “Bridgerton” fans get the opportunity to dive deep into the backstory of the beloved queen and her love story in the spinoff series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” which is now available to stream on Netflix.
The series introduces viewers to a young Charlotte, who travels to London to marry King George III and eventually take her place as queen. But how exactly does “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” connect back to the “Bridgerton” universe?
As mentioned in season one of “Bridgerton,” the marriage between Queen Charlotte and King George III opened the door for nonwhite elites to integrate into the ton. Young Charlotte’s journey is at the center of “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Viewers not only get to watch her grapple with marrying King George III against her will, but they also see how she grows to love him and steps into her role as queen while finding her voice as a ruler. The love that flourishes between her and King George III becomes the catalyst for the societal changes in the ton viewers are familiar with from “Bridgerton.” The series also gives additional insight into the beginnings of Charlotte’s relationships with other key characters, like Brimsley and Lady Danbury.

In previous seasons of “Bridgerton,” King George III does not make many public appearances due to his illness, and Queen Charlotte serves as the main public figurehead in his absence. In the prequel, fans not only get to witness the blossoming love between King George III and Queen Charlotte, but they also get more insight into King George’s personality and mental illness to better understand the deep love that he forms with his queen over time. Viewers also get a chance to understand the extent of his illness and how it affects him, even at a young age.
In the “Bridgerton” timeline, viewers get more insight into the nature of George and Charlotte’s romance in old age and how they’ve preserved it despite George’s mental illness progressing.

How Lady Agatha Danbury's "Queen Charlotte" and "Bridgerton" Storylines Connect
Lady Agatha Danbury is one of the fierce women in the “Bridgerton” universe and has close ties with Queen Charlotte. “Queen Charlotte” allows viewers to see their friendship from the start, as Agatha teaches the young queen about London society.
While “Bridgerton” fans already know Lady Danbury is a widow, the prequel answers questions about the nature of her and her husband’s relationship, why she never remarries, and the “discreet” love affair she experiences after his death.
In the “Bridgerton” timeline, viewers see Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton connect as they come to terms with that affair, as Violet becomes privy to the fact that Lady Danbury romanced her father, Lord Ledger.

Fondly known as the matriarch of the Bridgerton family, “Queen Charlotte” dives into Violet Bridgerton’s backstory (but to a lesser extent compared to the other “Bridgerton” characters). Viewers get to see her as a young woman coming up in society and expressing her wholehearted approval of the “Great Experiment” that would allow people of color to become nobility.
In the “Bridgerton” timeline, Violet grapples with feelings of sexual dissatisfaction and questions whether or not it’s time to begin pursuing romance again years after the death of her love, Edmund – a conundrum that Lady Danbury helps Violet navigate, unearthing a long-buried secret about her father in the process.
