Disney is reimagining the 1989 sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D., starring a young Neil Patrick Harris, for a new generation. Its newest series, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., is a coming-of-age dramedy that takes place in Hawaii and follows 16-year-old genius Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) as she balances life as a teenager and her budding medical career.
The show’s creator and executive producer, Kourtney Kang, “was born in Hawaii and raised in a Philadelphia suburb by her Irish mum and Korean dad” and “infuses her own life stories and experiences into this series centered on a mixed-race Asian-American girl,” according to a press release.
