Make Your Home Halloween-Chic with This Doll Head Planter DIY From TikTok
When it comes to Halloween decorations, you can either take the cutesy autumn harvest route, or go for super scary haunted house vibes. If you can’t quite find the happy medium between 12-foot tall skeletons or those simple Halloween doormats, this doll head planter DIY project might be exactly what you’re looking for.
The tutorial for this DIY comes from TikTok creator @BrookeDarwin, and it’s quite honestly uniquely creepy without being too gory or cheesy. The best part of all is that it’s a Halloween decoration that’s entirely functional and perfect for anyone who could always use another houseplant.
To attempt this DIY, all you need is a porcelain doll, some nail polish remover, and a few garden supplies. Once it’s completed, you’ll have your very own unique Halloween-themed planter! For all the details on how to make a doll head planter, keep reading.
Gather Your Supplies
To start, you’ll need to do some thrift shopping. In her video, @BrookeDarwin uses a porcelain doll, which are pretty expensive if you buy them brand new. However, I was able to find tons of options at my local thrift store for around $5. You really want to avoid plastic dolls since they aren’t as durable as porcelain. As for the other materials, you can find acetone-based nail polish remover, potting soil, and moss at your local department or hardware store.
Separate the Doll Head
Remove all fabric, hair, and the top part of the scalp, then detach the head from the body. You may need fabric scissors for this, as some parts may be sewn and others are glued.
Soak in Nail Polish Remover
Submerge the head in a bowl of nail polish remover to dissolve leftover adhesive, and let it soak until you can easily detach the eyes.
Remove the Paint
Use a cotton ball to scrub off any remaining paint on the eyebrows and the eyelashes, and the lips too, if you prefer.
Make Your Own Drainage System
Plug the hole at the bottom of the doll head with moss, or line it with cheese cloth, depending on how big it is. You could also use a plant saucer as @BrookeDarwin did in her video. This step is just for managing drainage like you would with any planter.
Add a Plant
Fill the head with potting soil, press moss into the eye holes, and add a plant of your choice.
