10 Children's Movies About Witches For Some Spooky Goodness
Add a touch of magic to family movie night with a children’s witch film. Spooky season or not, it’s always a fun time to follow a story full of sorcery and spells without having to binge on an entire TV show. (Though we are in full support if you do!) If you’re on the hunt for something that’s not too scary, you’ll definitely have great witchy options to add to your queue. Some of pop culture’s best spell-casters made their mark in children’s films, whether we’re looking at the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus or The Grand High Witch in The Witches. So get your cauldrons and wands ready – here are the best children’s witch movies to watch with your kids!
The Witches
It’s Anjelica Huston in a classic Roald Dahl adaptation! While Luke stays at a hotel with his grandma, he comes across a convention of witches where the leader has plans to turn children into mice. This is a cult classic with a PG rating, but we’d be remiss not to mention that it’s low-key terrifying (just based on the witch makeup alone), so it might be best suited for older children.
Mary and the Witch's Flower
In this charming animated family film, listless Mary follows a mysterious cat and picks up a “fly-by-night” flower that transports her straight to Endor College, a school of magic. After taking a few spellbinding lessons, Mary learns about the school administrators’ more sinister plans.
Mirror, Mirror
Julia Roberts as a wicked witch queen with zingers? We’re in. Lily Collins portrays Snow White, the queen’s stepdaughter who’s fallen in love with the prince (Armie Hammer) that the queen wants to marry for wealth.
Room on the Broom
This sweet one-shot Netflix film is based on Julia Donaldson’s not-so-spooky picture book of the same name. Narrated by Simon Pegg, the heartfelt short is about a kind redhead witch who invites animals to hop onto her broom, despite the fact that her cranky cat is worried that it’ll get too crowded.
The Addams Family
The iconic version of The Addams Family (currently on Netflix, if you’re interested) might lean a little more morbid and wry, but the animated take is perfect for kids. Charlize Theron voices Morticia Addams, the witchy matriarch of this spooky household. While the family is trying to prepare for creepy relatives to visit, they find themselves the targets of a meddling TV personality.
Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble
In this ’90s flick, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen portray two sisters who try to recover a moonstone from their evil, greedy Aunt Agatha in order to save her sister Sophia. Unless the twins cast a magical spell with the gem, Sophia will be forced to stay in the netherworld forever.
Hocus Pocus
We’d be remiss to do a roundup of classic family witch movies without mentioning Hocus Pocus! This Disney classic stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, a trio of 300-year-old witches who wreak havoc on the town of Salem, MA.
Halloweentown
In this classic Disney Channel Original Movie, 13-year-old Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) discovers a shocking secret about her family: that they are, in fact, witches. During her Grandma Aggie’s (Debbie Reynolds) annual Halloween visit, she discovers the wonders and dangers of Halloweentown, a place where magical beings of all kinds coexist. Good news if you love the original: there’s a total of four films in the franchise, and they’re all on Disney+!
Twitches
Yes, you know them from their iconic run on Sister, Sister. In Disney’s Twitches, Tia and Tamera Mowry get their sorcery on as twin witches who reunite on their 21st birthday and harness their combined powers to combat evil forces.
Kiki's Delivery Service
This ’90s animated movie is a sweet Hayao Miyazaki classic. Kiki the witch moves to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone in order to fulfill a requirement by her village’s witch-training program. After starting her own delivery business, Kiki loses her powers due to self-doubt and must find a way to get her magic back.
