Here’s What to Do If You Can’t Wear a Menstrual Cup With Your IUD

It’s commonly thought that a menstrual cup can dislodge your IUD. And while that has happened to some women, in reality, it doesn’t happen as often as you think. In saying that, though, from personal experience, I can tell you that it’s never comfortable wearing a menstrual cup with an IUD.

Menstrual cups use suction to stay in place, which can feel uncomfortable, especially if you have an IUD. No one wants to walk around feeling stressed that their menstrual cup is dislodging their IUD. People who menstruate have enough things to worry about, in my humble opinion.

Additionally, for people like me that suffer from endometriosis, or any chronic pain or illness related to their reproductive health, that suction feeling can actually exacerbate an already painful period.

Enter: the Hello Disc.

Health and wellness company Hello Period has just come out with Hello Disc, a replacement for the menstrual cup, designed especially for those who have an IUD.

Like a menstrual cup, it collects period blood. Unlike a menstrual cup, the Hello Disc is held in place by being tucked under the pubic bone (rather than via suction) — so it’s a great option if you have an IUD. The Hello Disc can also be used during penetrative intercourse — yes — we’re talking no-mess period sex! ‘Hello’ less laundry and more good times, TBH.

The Hello Disc is also a sustainable option like the menstrual cup, which is one of the main factors that people have made the switch. Less tampons and pads = less waste, and the Hello Disc is reusable for years.

Previous iterations of the menstrual disc have mostly been pretty difficult to remove, which is why we don’t really hear about them. This Hello Disc, however, has finally solved this frustration with other disc designs. Designed by Registered Nurse, Mary Bond and a globally renowned menstrual cup and disc expert, Kim Rosas, the Hello Disc is designed with an innovative double-loop removal tab, which makes it super easy to remove. We love.

“We knew Kim Rosas was the person to team up with for this project because she’s an internationally trusted menstrual cup and disc guru,” Bond says.

“She’s pretty much tried every reusable period product on the market. We’ve worked for over a year perfecting the Hello Disc. The feedback from our testers has been phenomenal.”

Each Hello Disc is made of a premium FDA-registered medical grade silicone and if inserted correctly (it comes with instructions), the disc provides literal hours of leak-proof protection and has more capacity than tampons, pads, or cups.

You can shop the Hello Disc online here and say goodbye to switching pads/tampons every few hours.
