Here's What's in Store For Your Money and Career in 2020, According to Your Zodiac Sign
Major things are happening among the stars in 2020, and with that comes major changes. With the completion of a significant astrological cycle, the cosmos are making way for a new era with Saturn’s final foray into Capricorn, and that has a direct impact on your finance and career horoscope for 2020.
POPSUGAR spoke with Shannon Aganza, astrologer at MoonGathering in Carlsbad, CA, about what the pairing of Saturn and Capricorn means. “Saturn is the planet of structure, hard work, and a sense of foundation – particularly within the material world,” she said. “Think of Saturn as your cosmic boss or authority figure. It’s all about boundaries.” So, when Saturn goes into Capricorn, it’s like two peas in a pod with all of this hard work on hyperdrive. “Capricorn is the sign of achievement, discipline, stability, and responsibility,” she continued. “Those two together make for a strong foundation.”
So, when is this all happening? From now until March 21 and from July 16 until Dec. 16, these career-centered astrological entities are going to have a huge impact on every sign’s bottom line and professional trajectory. And while things may feel challenging this year, it’s all for a good reason. “It’s like having a drill sergeant bringing you needed discipline for success,” Aganza said.
There’s also one more event happening this year that might impact your cash flow and promotions: Venus retrogrades in Gemini, which occurs from May 12 until June 25. During this time, Venus – or “the planet that rules money and how we value ourselves,” Aganza said – will allow us to ask ourselves what we really want. “We will identify where we feel undervalued, or more importantly, where we are undervaluing ourselves,” she explained. “What relationships drain our energy, whether that be our coworkers, our boss, or even our friends’ dramas.”
With all that in mind, here’s how all of this plays out for you (and your money) specifically, depending on your sign! But pro tip: read these based on your rising sign (not just your sun sign). This can give you the most valuable and accurate information. Don’t know what your rising sign is? Get your chart on a free site.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Your money: Aquarians stand to benefit the most from this year’s cosmic events; setting up a system for saving money will be in your favor, according to Aganza. “Jupiter in Capricorn rules the money house this year, so monetary rewards come from working with things that are long lasting,” she said. Start a savings account, or set up some long-term investments.
Your career: Have you hit the ceiling at work? “You’ll need to ask yourself if you’ve hit maximum growth potential at your job or business,” she said. Sept. 9 through Nov. 13 will “provide clarity on where your energy is being wasted and would be better redirected,” she said, but tread lightly while you get this clarity. “Watch out for conflict and being more reactive in the workplace during this time.”
What else you need to know: Clarity about your “what’s next” career-wise will be strong between March 21 and July 16. According to Aganza, “The rest of the year is spent doing the work to get there.”
- Avoid: impulsive spending
- Embrace: patience; relaxing into slow progress
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
Your money: It’s time to think about your spending habits, Pisces! According to Aganza, 2020 will force you to “become conscious about what triggers impulsive spending” and that you’ll experience “strong opportunities for removing fear around scarcity and guilt from overspending, and allowing the natural flow of abundance that is the Pisces’s birthright.”
Your career: Your career has potential to take off. This year, you’ll be seeing yourself in a “more expanded role or position,” she said. “This is a year of rooted growth career-wise for Pisces.”
What else you need to know: Aganza said you’ll be presented with “huge opportunities to break old habits around spending, especially around impulse buying or unconscious spending.” Again, with the impulsive habits. This is your year to autocorrect.
- Avoid: spending for temporary comfort
- Embrace: the unknown (don’t let fear of the unknown block a career change)
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Your money: Your stock is rising, Aries. “Investment in self should be a part of the budget this year,” Aganza said. This means nix the instant gratification, and invest in your bigger plans. “All spending should feed into the nurturing of the big plan or ‘vision’ of future self.”
Your career: You’re still working hard, and there’s light at the end of the tunnel. “Aries have been working harder in their careers these past few years, but the rewards are so close!” Things will start to pay off mid-December.
What else you need to know: “Aries is one of the most strongly activated signs this year!” Aganza said. “But this will not be without an effort to push through. Aries, it is vitally important to be clear in who you are and what your contribution is to the world as a whole.”
- Avoid: conflict
- Embrace: patience; “knowing that even though the ‘pace’ is sometimes uncomfortably slow, there is movement,” Aganza said.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Your money: Your frugal mind is going to see new horizons, Taurus. “While Taurus is known for frugality in dealing with their own money, a shift in perspective helps to open and expand this area of life,” Aganza said. “This may come through having to make quick decisions around the handling of money this year and pushing past the comfort zone – but the act of responding in the moment and doing something different is the medicine.”
Your career: It’s been quite a journey the past few years, hasn’t it? “Taurus has been learning so much about their value and purpose,” she continued. What you’ve learned and experienced over the last few years – plus some newly gained wisdom – is all going to come together. “Look to 2021 being the fuller expression of ‘knowing’ where the career is heading,” and consider 2020 the building to that point, she said.
What else you need to know: “Venus’s retrograde will be experienced more deeply by Taurus, as Venus rules Taurus,” she said. “Venus will retrograde in Taurus’s house of money and resources, so don’t be surprised if experiences around relationships with money and security present themselves to be resolved.”
- Avoid: stubbornly avoiding change
- Embrace: stability within inevitable change
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Your money: Slow down, and start to look at your spending patterns. Insights will help you this year. “The benefit comes from slowing down and really looking at what money is being spent on and refocusing,” Aganza said. The goal for this year is creating a stable base while nixing unnecessary luxuries. “Invest in the security of having more savings.”
Your career: You’re in a building process, “gathering resources,” Aganza explained. “Geminis are still filling their toolbox for the career they may not have a clear picture of yet.”
If you do feel solid in your career already, Aganza said you can look forward to “something pleasantly unexpected manifesting.” What a treat!
What else you need to know: “It’s OK if you feel directionless and are questioning what to do next,” she said. “Time will catch up to you next year.”
- Avoid: anxiety from feeling “purposeless”
- Embrace: finding purpose in self-care
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Your money: Aganza said Cancers should be excited for 2020: “Finally the tide is shifting for Cancer this year! Summer heralds the shifting energy, and while Cancer tends to care for everyone else, this year brings the rewards for the hard work of the last few years.” Prepare to reap what you’ve been sowing, Cancer friends!
Your career: “Fall of 2020 opens fresh, new opportunities career-wise for Cancer,” she said. “Clear boundaries are set around those who take advantage of your kindness, leaving more energy for you.”
What else you need to know: “Cancer has been pushed out of their comfort zone the past few years, feeling pressure to know their ‘purpose,'” she said. “That pressure releases midyear, allowing for a more natural flow and alignment with being happy exactly where they are.”
- Avoid: resisting the helping hand of others
- Embrace: compassion
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
Your money: We don’t want to be the bearer of bad news or use the “B” word with you, but it’s time to budget, dear Leo. “Rein in spending if that is an issue,” Aganza said. “This time is more about the cultivation of self-discipline and creating an infrastructure for the monetization of future creations.” Big plans in the future? Time to start preparing your finances. Use this time wisely.
Your career: “As business structures are changing and innovating, so is Leo’s role within these new systems,” she explained. “As the old structures of what ‘leadership’ and ‘power’ mean change, Leo waits patiently to emerge with leadership that allows for the collaboration of many voices.” Get ready to roar in the coming months.
What else you need to know: There’s always going to be a silver lining for a Leo, even when times are tough. “Leo’s rules the Sun, and all planets orient themselves to the Sun. So when in despair, a Leo can will a positive outcome into existence.”
- Avoid: sensitivity to criticism
- Embrace: self-cultivated radiance – “Leo holds light like no other,” Aganza said.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Your money: Spend smarter this year, Virgo. Make a plan for expenditures that serve your goals. It’s a year to especially live within your means. “Virgo is the natural master of what is required by all in 2020, which is living within one’s means and only purchasing things that serve a purpose,” Aganza explained.
Your career: The time that will affect you most in 2020 is Venus’s retrograde, which falls in your house of career this year. “So much will be figured out in May and June of this year,” Aganza said. “Allow this transit to be light; release expectations of an outcome and enjoy the moving energy.”
What else you need to know: When the frost of Winter thaws, you’re getting some serious direction. “Spring is a deeply potent time for Virgo to reflect on and get clarity around any needed changes within their career.”
- Avoid: needless worry
- Embrace: the mantra “all is well”
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Your money: Dealing with debt? This is your year to take care of business. Aganza explained: “2020 is about paying off debt for Libra. Work with what you have, and hire an accountant if you don’t already have one.” Don’t fret; this isn’t about beating yourself up, but quite the opposite. “Becoming empowered around money is Libra’s theme this year.”
Your career: If you’ve struggled with finding purpose within your career this past year, know that change is on the way. “This cycle shifts gears in May,” she said. The first order of business? Recharge, restore, renew, and take care of yourself so you can be energized and ready for next career steps. “Then clarity around your purpose will emerge,” she continued.
What else you need to know: As with Virgo, this upcoming Venus retrograde will be experienced more deeply by Libra, as Venus rules Libra. “Venus will retrograde in Libra’s house of wisdom, so don’t be surprised if epiphanies around relationships with money present themselves to be resolved.”
- Avoid: finding comfort in frivolous spending
- Embrace: a financial accountability buddy
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Your money: The next opportunity may have been hiding in plain sight when it comes to your finances, Scorpio! Get ready to invest it, and prepare for the long term: “Success is found in looking where there may be hidden opportunities – a diamond in the rough,” Aganza said. “Money and resources may increase this year, but investing for future security is the wise decision for Scorpio in 2020.”
Your career: As with your money, 2020 is a big year for your career, too. As Aganza put it, it’s packed with opportunity. There’s one small catch: “If you want to move forward, you can’t do everything,” she said. “You have to be strategic. You’re having to think long term about the plans or consequences.”
What else you need to know: Figure out your priorities and what is most important to you with career and finance, and put your energy into that. Don’t try to do everything.
- Avoid: overthinking (it can lead to paralysis)
- Embrace: prioritization
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
Your money: Saturn has been in Capricorn since late 2017 and has been “specifically teaching Sagittarius about money and self-worth through the lesson of hard work over the last two years,” Aganza said. “This continues through 2020, but there’s a shift. Instead of just dealing with situations imposed upon you, a clear vision of what’s next presents itself in the money house.” So you’re still going to be working hard, but you’ll get a glimpse of the payoff this year.
Your career: As with your money house, your career is following a similar path. “Consolidation and coherence are keywords for Sag this year,” she said. “We’re looking at quality, not quantity. Growth is slow, but rooted.”
What else you need to know: “This is a year of slowing the pace down in order to strengthen the foundation,” she explained.
- Avoid: excessiveness
- Embrace: focusing on the big-picture plan
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Your money: “Finally some relief!” Aganza said, and if you’re a Capricorn, you already know what she’s talking about. It’s been . . . rough. “Capricorn has been host to some of the most challenging cosmic weather alignments these past few years,” she said. “While we’re not completely out of the woods until December of this year, the pace and productivity changes. Payoff from efforts around money starts off slowly and gradually, but eventually [think mid-December, just in time for your birthday] becomes long lasting and fixed or permanent.”
Your career: Again, there is a slow, steady build; this applies to career, too. Don’t let the pace make you anxious. “Improvement comes through systematizing or building systems for something already started,” she said.
What else you need to know: Keep up the hard work; it’ll be so worth it. “We’re making slow and incremental changes that build up over time, so there’s not an immediate payoff, but if Cap keeps at it, success with desired outcome will be achieved,” she explained.
- Avoid: giving up
- Embrace: the comfort of a plan
