A Wii-ly Ambitious Project: This TikTok User Is Replacing Parts of His Car With Wii Remotes
Did you replace your car’s steering wheel with a Wii racing wheel, or are you normal? That’s what TikTok user @ttptng did in a video that’s amassed 3.1 million views, and since then he’s continued to replace parts of an old Mazda Miata with Nintendo Wii remotes and accessories. Thus, the Mazda Wiiata was born.
The first video in the Wiiata saga, captioned “Mario kart irl,” shows Tyler Atkin removing the stock wheel in the car and screwing on an old Wii racing wheel grip instead. He installs the new wheel into the dashboard and slots in a Wii remote to finish the look. Check it out:
A few videos later, Atkins takes the Wiiata for a drive and the new steering wheel actually works, although he calls it “a horrendous experience.”
That easily could have been where he ended it, but instead Atkins asked what he should customise next, and his viewers had a lot of ideas. “Now make the gearstick a nunchuck,” wrote one, to which Atkins replied: “Let’s a go.”
Next, he opts for something simple, replacing the driver’s side floor mat with the green Wii Fit mat.
…and then something not so simple.
His most recent upgrade has been replacing the car radio with a Wii console that’s actually wired in and can charge a phone. He’s even installed a screen on the dash that can play real Mario Kart (when he’s not driving, of course).
At this point, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to stop any time soon. There’s even been talk of having a custom livery made for the outside of the car to make it look like a classic Wii-era Mario Kart vehicle. You can follow the Wiiata’s journey on Atkins’ TikTok here to see what he does next.
