Sims tragics, rejoice! “The Sims 5” is officially in the works. EA and developer Maxis are being very hush hush about it, but we’ve learned a few sweet details — including the fact that “The Sims 5” will have multiplayer and be on mobile.
The game is still a few years off, so we’re going to spend that time collecting everything we know about “The Sims 5” (codenamed Project Rene) right here.
What Is “The Sims 5” Release Date?
“The Sims 5” doesn’t have a release date yet, and the game unfortunately won’t be out for a few years yet.
Will “The Sims 5” Have Multiplayer?
It will have “collaborative play”, but EA hasn’t specified how in-depth this will be. It might be a fully-fledged multiplayer mode or simply the ability to share Sims and houses between friends. We’re obviously hoping for the former, but time will tell.
What we do know is that the game will “explore innovative ways to not only tell stories but to collaborate on those stories or creations with your closest friends across your favourite devices.” That doesn’t really… tell us anything about “The Sims 5” multiplayer, but it sure is enough to get us excited for it.
But this focus on multiplayer won’t mean “The Sims 5” lacks a satisfying single player experience.
Game director Grant Rodiek explained the combo like this: “Project Rene is not an MMO. It is not this public, shared space where everything you do is always with other people. You could play on your own, on your terms, and then again, when you want on your terms, you can invite others to come and play with you. That’s the structure that we’re pursuing, and we think that’s really cool and perfect for The Sims.”
Will “The Sims 5” Be On Mobile?
In the January Behind the Sims stream, game director Grant Rodiek explained how “The Sims 5” on mobile will “remove the barriers to play.”
“You can have that deep dive, at home, on your PC, play for four hours, change every single thing about a piece of furniture that you imagine — typing in RGB values and changing every single part. That’s the PC experience, the true, rich experience you’re used to,” Rodiek said.
“Then on the go, you can grab your phone, and maybe it’s a different experience. Maybe you’re grabbing archetypes, pre-selecting templates, or grabbing the stuff you’ve already created. What this means is you can now play The Sims wherever you are, without barriers and without restrictions.”
By the sounds of it, “The Sims 5” mobile will be a fully-fledged version of the game on phones, with a focus on building and decorating. We haven’t heard anything about actually playing as our Sims on mobile, but “without barriers and without restrictions” makes that sound likely.
What New Building Features Will Be In “The Sims 5”?
It looks like we’ll have much more control over how our houses look, with the coveted Create-A-Style tool from “The Sims 3” possibly even making a comeback. The video shows individual parts of a piece of furniture being customised like the base, headboard and footboard of a bed, and a colour wheel comes out at one point to dial in the perfect shade of blue for a couch.
By the looks of it, we’ll also have much more freedom in where and how to place items inside a house. Instead of being restricted to placing items inside a grid, the video shows pieces of furniture being scattered around a living room in a much more free-form and realistic manner.
“We’re building the next generation Sims game and creative platform, reimaging the Sims you know and love with new ways to play,” said Lyndsay Pearson, VP of Franchise Creative for The Sims.
Pearson said the changes they’re making are designed to offer “more flexibility than ever before.”
