Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr has made history as the first female soccer player to star on the cover of the global version of a FIFA game, and we couldn’t be more proud!
EA revealed the cover artwork for FIFA 23 today, which features Kerr alongside Kylian Mbappé, a star player in Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team. Check it out here:
She isn’t the first female player to grace the cover of a FIFA game — fellow Matildas player Steph Catley was on the Australian cover of FIFA 16, and international players Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair have also featured on regional covers. What’s amazing about this is that Kerr is the first female player to appear on the global cover of a FIFA game. She’s not just being put on our local version, she’s on the main cover of the Ultimate Edition and Standard Edition, shining a spotlight on Australian players and women’s sport around the world.
This has led fans to speculate whether FIFA 23 will be the first game in the series to include women’s leagues. Putting one of the most talented and famous female soccer players on the cover but not including her properly in the game would be virtue signalling at its finest, after all.
But the fact that Kerr is wearing the blue uniform of her Chelsea FC team — which competes in the Women’s Super League, the highest league of women’s soccer in England — points towards the fact that the league will be included.
EA will release more information about FIFA 23 in a stream you can watch here on Thursday, July 21, so hopefully all our questions will be answered soon.
