The next Minecraft game is an action adventure spinoff that will take you on an epic journey across the Overworld. Minecraft Legends will combine the original game’s classic building with an exciting campaign, new graphics and new strategies to play.
Announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Minecraft Legends looks like a fresh take on the series that will appeal to long-time fans and people who have never quite gotten into the sandbox games. Here’s everything we know so far about Minecraft Legends.
What Is the Minecraft Legends Release Date?
The game doesn’t have a release date yet, but Mojang has said it will come out in 2023.
Every game revealed during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase is coming out in the next 12 months, so we can narrow the Minecraft Legends release date to June 2023 at the latest.
What Is Minecraft Legends About?
Unlike the original Minecraft, Minecraft Legends has a story-driven campaign. When the piglins invade, you must form alliances to build an army capable of defending the Overworld before the Nether corruption devours it.
“According to the legend, only you can bring together the mobs of the Overworld and help them defend their home,” Mojang said in an announcement post.
The trailer shows you riding a horse at the head of an army of creepers, skeletons and zombies, so it looks like a few classic Minecraft villains will be fighting on your side this time around.
What Is the Minecraft Legends Gameplay Like?
The other big difference compared to the original game is that Minecraft Legends is an action-strategy.
“You will defend peaceful settlements and fight hordes of piglins to stop the spread of their Nether corruption. You are the centre of every battle you lead, fighting alongside your allies while giving them directions.”
The announcement trailer has a few sneak peeks of how this will work — at 1:43, your character calls nearby followers to their position by waving a blue flag, and at 1:48 you can see green arrows on the ground directing your troops to attack a specific target.
Will Minecraft Legends Have Crafting?
It will be different to how crafting and building works in the original game, but yes. To match the rest of the gameplay, crafting will happen at a much faster pace, and you’ll be able to direct it from a distance.
At 1:39 in the trailer we see our character collecting resources and then a wooden fortress is rapidly built in front of them. It almost looks like crafting will use pre-made structures that you can choose between, instead of the free-hand approach of the original game where you can build anything you can imagine. In this way, Minecraft Legends looks like a halfway point between the original game and Minecraft Dungeons, the action-oriented dungeon crawler spinoff.
Is Minecraft Legends Multiplayer?
Minecraft Legends will have online campaign co-op, so you can play through the story with friends. It will also have competitive multiplayer, presumably where you can challenge your friends to see whose army emerges victorious.
What Platforms Will Minecraft Legends Be On?
Minecraft Legends will be on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC.
