Long before Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen founded their successful clothing line The Row, they proved they were fashion girls in my heart with the hit 2004 movie New York Minute. The movie made me think about what living in New York would be like and all the crazy situations that must just be part of life in the big city. Mostly, though, I fantasized about the clothes. After seeing Roxy wearing a Metallica tee, I searched desperately for one to add to my own closet – not because I like the band, but because of how cool she makes it look. While today, the sisters are often seen in sleek and luxe pieces from their brand, their style in the movie is a complete 180, so it’s been particularly interesting to take a look back.
The movie follows twin sisters Jane and Roxy Ryan, who head to New York City for the day. A buttoned-up Jane is trying out for an overseas college program, while Roxy is trying to scheme a way to meet her favorite punk band. Needless to say, chaos ensues, and they find themselves in multiple hysterical situations. Jane’s prim style consists of chic blazer and skirt sets, while Roxy is often seen in band tees and distressed denim. Somehow, the sisters even find a way to make the tourist-bait “I Heart NY” T-shirts look cool by cutting them into V-necks and styling them with a pleated skirt and shorts, respectively. Keep reading to see some of the movie’s best style moments, straight from the early aughts.

In the movie, the sisters are complete opposites when it comes to style.

Jane loves a tailored blazer, while Roxy is more of a grungy band-tee kind of gal. I particularly love Jane’s pink inflatable neck pillow, which is so ’00s.

Roxy embraces the double-shirt trend from the early aughts in a Metallica tee, distressed denim, beret, and hobo bag. Jane, on the other hand, loves the ballet-flat trend and styles hers with a blazer and button-down.

The sisters play with textures in the movie, too. Jane wears a teal leather jacket and miniskirt set, while Roxy goes for a red sweatsuit paired with heels. It really doesn’t get any more nostalgic than a velvet sweatsuit!

Even the dog’s carrier is on point with its bohemian print.

Ever wondered how to make an “I Heart NY” shirt look fashionable? Style it with red shorts or a pleated miniskirt for a more ’00s look.

The rubber bracelets and chunky wedges really take me back.

Who doesn’t love a good towel/bathrobe moment? Of course, the look isn’t complete without a hobo bag that screams early aughts.

I particularly love that they’re wearing the hotel slippers as well.

Remember when oversize capes were a thing? Roxy is a boho pro in hers while playing the drums.

She accessorizes her look with a stack of red beaded necklaces. The more, the better!

I’m all about the tiny glasses she styles with her pajama set.

You can dress up your blazer with a crinkled satin tank top. Bonus points if you add on a pair of big hoop earrings.
