The Oscars Red Carpet Makes the Case For the Return of the Statement Necklace
If, along with your wide-leg jeans and nylon shoulder bags, you too buried your statement necklaces in the depths of your closet, it’s time to dig them out of hiding. Like many of the trends beloved in the early 2000s, statement necklaces are experiencing something of a comeback, popping up all over the Oscars on Sunday as the accessory of choice on the red carpet.
Mindy Kaling’s look hit me with a wave of nostalgia when she hit the red carpet, showing off that classic glam combination: a bare neckline that practically begs for a big, bold bauble finished with a dramatic bib necklace. She gave the dress exactly what it was asking for, and it just makes sense.
Still, there are other, less obvious ways to wear them. You might remember Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out for the Globes with a tiered statement necklace memorably layered underneath her sheer Valentino gown. Gal Gadot made a similar statement at the Oscars, adding her knockout necklace on top of a lacy high-neck gown. So, frankly, there’s no wrong way to wear them. Ahead, get inspired to embrace some big bling and bring back the crystal studded statement necklaces of 2007.

Idina’s strapless gown left ample room for her sparkly Harry Winston necklace.
Gal Gadot at the 2020 Oscars
Gal’s gown didn’t exactly leave room for a necklace, but she proved layering a shimmering Tiffany & Co. necklace over her lacy high neck was just as effective of a statement.
