Moissanite and diamonds are almost indistinguishable, even when placed next to each other. Both are rare to find naturally, so scientists have found a way to grow both gemstones in lab environments. A huge win for ethical and sustainable sourcing practices.
For those that haven’t heard of moissanite before, it’s a unique gemstone named after French chemist, Henri Moissan who first discovered it inside a meteorite crater. Diamond, on the other hand, is a precious jewel that’s composed of highly pressurised carbon, found 160km below Earth’s surface and so requiring lots of heavy machinery to extract.
The easiest way to tell the difference between moissanite and diamonds is to look at the colour, says Makayla Donovan, co-founder of The Moissanite Company. Moissanite has more of a white hue whereas diamonds look greyer. Moissanite is also a much more affordable option ranging from $1,200 to $5,000. Basically, with moissanite, you can add some sparkle to your ‘fits for waaaaay less.
For now, not many everyday jewellery settings incorporate moissanite, but that said, we’re sure to see it used more in the years to come. The precious gem is favourable when looking for more affordable and responsibly sourced gemstones for engagement ring designs.
Ahead, we’ve pulled together a few silver and gold pieces with a variety of other gemstones so you can stay icy whilst we await more moissanite jewellery to hit mainstream retailers.
