While it can tricky to perfect jewellery stacking, once you’ve perfected which accessories work well together, you can say hello to elevated outfits.
Necklaces can be especially hard to figure out. There are so many different lengths, pendants and styles to play with. And of course, the last thing we want is to have it looking like a mess.
So, to help you out, we’ve got some expert tips from Kerryn Langer, creative director at Australian jewellery brand, Arms of Eve. Ahead, Langer shares her advice on how to build the perfect necklace stack.

Balance Is Key
“Understanding lengths, sizing, and proportions are key to creating a balanced necklace stack,” says Langer. She suggests starting with a choker-style, short necklace and then working your way down.
Mix It Up
Styling outfits using varied textures in your jewellery is a great way to create your own personal style, says Langer. She also advises you play with fun colour combinations and materials including pearls and colourful gems. “Going for an all-gold stack? Make sure the tones and textures complement each other for a cohesive flow,” she says.
Think About the Neckline
If you’re planning to style a stack for an event, Langer believes that it’s always a good idea to consider the neckline of your outfit. This will determine what the lengths of your chain should be. She says, “A low necklace pairs well with a longer pendant necklace, while a high neckline is best completed with a simple gold chain or beaded necklace.”
More Is More!
If Langer says that “more is more!”, we’re going to have to side with her. The creative director mentions that she’ll often use four or more chains in her stack, but says to always make sure that it feels comfortable. If you’re new to the world of jewellery stacking, try two chains and work your way to maximalist goodness.
Personalise It
Jewellery is different for everyone — you might only use it to add some dazzle to your ‘fits or maybe it tells a sentimental story. One way to add a personal touch to your jewellery, she suggests, is to incorporate a charm into your second layer.
Use a Stacking Clasp
It’s all fun and games until your necklaces get tangled. A stacking clasp is well worth the investment, says Langer. Clip on all of your chains to ensure that the layers stay where they need to be and don’t risk a gold jumble.
