Neon Is the Trend Du Jour at AAFW — Here’s How to Embrace It Now
We can’t say we expected it, but neon appears to be the biggest recurring theme across the resort ’22 collections at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW).
The ’80s palette is back with a vengeance, and after a year indoors wearing loungewear co-ords, it’s a perfect fit for the collective resurgence of all-nighters and dance parties with our pals.
At AAFW, the trend is taking shape in many forms, mostly across formal and cocktail garments like dresses and matching sets. We saw evening gowns at Mariam Seddiq and Yousef Akbar, neon frocks at Aje, and cute sets at Ginger & Smart and Alice McCall. It was the bright sight we didn’t know we needed from the Australian fashion community.
But despite how much we love it, it’s understandable to feel a little apprehensive about how you might apply the neon trend to your own everyday wardrobe.
Neon is a big commitment; a statement. It’s also very memorable, which might deter some from investing in neon pieces if it means you might feel less inclined to repeat the look (not exactly conducive to building a sustainable capsule wardrobe!). But the good news is you can easily apply the neon trend in smaller, more nuanced ways.
Here’s how.
Accessorise
Neon accessories are a subtle way to embrace the trend. Whether booties, earrings or a handbag, a fluro accessory is a low-touch way to stay current, while saving on a full look.
Swipe it across the lids
We saw neon lids in a number of shows at AAFW, and for those looking to make the most of the trend, a makeup look is perhaps the easiest way to test it out. Swipe a neon shadow across the eyelids, or if you’re feeling particularly bold, a bright lip in neon orange or pink could be the way to go.
