A Stylist on Her Secret For Nailing a Mardi Gras Outfit

Colour, creativity and all of the glitter — Mardi Gras is a time to throw aside your everyday wear (unless, of course, that is your everyday wear) and go out all out with your outfit. And, with the Sydney Mardi Gras Fair Day coming up on Sunday, February 20 and the Parade on Saturday, March 5, not to mention countless Mardi Gras events taking place around the city over the next few weeks, the time to start planning what that’ll be is now.

“Mardi Gras is a celebration of love, equality and self-expression, so when it comes to dressing for the occasion, there really is no right or wrong,” says Nicole Adolphe, Head of Style at THE ICONIC. “It’s about expressing your individuality and celebrating your unique style through clothing and accessories that bring out your fun and playful side.”

So, with that in mind, ahead, Adolphe shares how to create your perfect Mardi Gras ‘fit.

Dress in Rainbow Colours

“Go loud and team as many colours and prints or textures as you like. Less is not more when it comes to Mardi Gras. Think sequins, sparkles, bright colours, metallic textures or faux feathers. Prints are the perfect way to insert more colour into your look. Alternatively, you could pick one or two shades for your outfit and then use your makeup and accessories to inject more colour to your look. For lovers of monochrome, try wearing white, black or silver and add a pop of colour with your shoes.”

Incorporate Glitter — and Lots of It

“No Mardi Gras outfit is complete without glitter and a great way to incorporate some shimmer is through your makeup and nails. Have some fun trying different eyeshadow shades, nail polish hues and lip tints. If you’re looking for extra glam, check out some of the biodegradable glitter options available on THE ICONIC. The Glitter Tribe range is made using plants, not plastic, as a more environmentally-friendly way to inject glitz to your look.”

For a fun make-up look, grab The Body Shop’s limited-edition Out For Love highlighters, of which $2 from each purchase goes to Minus18’s Young Leaders Program designed to inspire the next generation of LGBTQIA+ leaders. Dab them on your lips, cheeks or eyelids.

Not Keen on Glitter? Swap It for Sequins

“For those who want to avoid the hassle of glitter, sequins are the perfect glam alternative. A sequin jacket is a great way to jazz up your total look or try a shimmer-inspired mini skirt, top or dress. You could also incorporate sequins through a pair of heels or trainers.”

Be Sure to Wear Comfy Shoes

“If you’re going to be dancing the night away or watching the parade, comfy shoes are the way to go. A sneaker or a chunky heel you know you can walk and dance in for hours on end is my pick.”
