There was something fishy going on at the London Film Festival this weekend – and we don’t mean Harry Styles’ notable absence. Instead, we want to draw your attention to a more literal fish: Emma Corrin‘s goldfish-in-a-bag dress. Wearing the fashion curveball, Corrin stepped onto the red carpet on 15 Oct. for the premiere of “My Policeman”, in which they star alongside Styles and David Dawson, in a typically off-kilter look.
The JW Anderson minidress is designed to resemble a plastic bag, tied in a knot at the shoulder, filled with a goldfish, like the type that used to be won at fairgrounds. The asymmetric dress was first seen at the spring 2023 show in Sept. and was a wonderfully weird choice for the actor who has been known to embrace the more bizarre end of the fashion spectrum. Working with their stylist, Harry Lambert, Corrin, who also attended the film festival on Friday to promote their other film “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”, teamed the dress with Cartier drop earrings and black mules.
Keeping their makeup minimal and overgrown pixie cut brushed forward, Corrin, who rose to fame with their breakout role as Princess Diana in “The Crown”, posted snaps of the premiere on Instagram along with the caption, “WHO BELONGS TO THIS FISH? (10 bucks if you guess the film) Huge thankyou to LFF for having us premiere My Policeman here in London. Loved making this one, so much heart and a good reminder of what we’ve fought for and what we still have to fight for.” Opinions were split on the film reference in the comments as some fans guessed “You’ve Got Mail” (linking the moment Joe, played by Tom Hanks, enters the book shop carrying balloons and a goldfish), while others guessed, “A Fish Called Wanda” (for obvious reasons).
This isn’t the first time Corrin has leaned into unusually eye-catching fashion choices. They wore a balloon bra over a midi dress at the 2022 Olivier Awards, a high-cut bodysuit with a cape at the Toronto Film Festival, and hooded lemon dress with black stiletto nails at the 2021 Emmys. The star, who came out as nonbinary last year, is constantly pushing boundaries and having fun with their look. From gracing the cover of Vogue with body hair and a fantastic grin to this weekend’s fish frock. Could the dress be alluding to the goldfish bowl effect of fame? Perhaps. Either way, Corrin is shaking up red carpet fashion and it makes for a welcome sense of fun and humour.
Take a look at all angles of the polarising look ahead.
