Look, if we didn’t have a need for raincoats, we wouldn’t be sad about it. Rainy days should be spent indoors permanently, but sadly, life just doesn’t work that way and sometimes we have to venture out into those puddle-filled streets, on a treacherous journey to work that no outfit will survive without some covering.
The problem is, raincoats have long been synonymous with ugliness. What was cute when we were kids (oversized yellow things with, for no particular reason, a million toggles on them) is decidedly less cute when thrown over our knit dress and knee-high boots.
Just use an umbrella, you say? A great choice on a showery day, but try protecting yourself from the elements when gale force winds are involved. No one likes a soggy jumper, and as much as you try to rectify things with the communal bathroom straightener, that drizzle-covered hair you slaved over all morning is just going to have to go into a sleek bun.
Thankfully, plenty of labels have realised that rain-proof outerwear doesn’t have to be devoid of style. Take a look at these great buys, from sleek and minimalist to retro and quirky.
Volcom Sprain Dead Raincoat
Volcom have options for everyone — designs that look like regular trench coats but feature water-resistant material so you don’t soak yourself, through to this leather-look coat ($150) that we want to wear everywhere, not just on rainy days.
Amble Refuge Long Waterproof Raincoat
The swirl pattern on this navy blue raincoat elevates it style-wise, so instead of it dulling down your outfit, it definitely jazzes it up. The Amble Refuge Long Waterproof Raincoat ($249) is made of 100 per cent recycled polyester, and has zip pockets to stash your belongings if you’re out running errands.
The North Face Rain Hoodie
Outdoor and outwear specialist have created a collection of Rain Hoodies ($260) that feature a relaxed fit, fully waterproof material and punchy colourways.
Marks and Spencer Waterproof Hooded Parka
The Waterproof Hooded Parka ($195) from Marks and Spencer is lightweight and windproof, with a classic mid-length cut that gives just enough coverage on wet days. The hood and cuffs are adjustable, and there’s also a dedicated slot for your headphones (if you’re still using the cord-style) that allows you to keep your phone protected in your pocket during your commute, while still listening to your favourite podcast.
RAINS Curve Jacket
Another beauty from RAINS, this is exactly why we love the functional-yet-stylish label. Designed like a classic trench coat, this rain jacket ($200) will also keep you dry and hits the perfect knee length to make sure you cover scarves and blazers, too.
Gorman Leopard Pink Raincoat
This one’s for anyone who likes to dopamine dress when the weather is bad! Gorman is always a go-to for bright patterns and quirky pieces, and this raincoat ($99) is no exception. With a print by designer Meg Fransee, the jacket is a relaxed fit and has a full hood to cover your hair.
