Regardless of what decade you were born in, it’s safe to say everyone is chronically nostalgic for the ‘90s. We’ve seen Gen Z emulate the makeup and style from the era to the older generation revisiting Friends for about the 100th time.
There was something about the period between 1990 and 2000 that just makes you feel warm inside. In those 10 years, a massive cultural shift occurred. We had some of the best sitcoms to exist till this day, Tamagotchis came to fruition, and Britney Spears was topping the charts at the age of 16.
Today, the ‘90s are as relevant as ever, with supermodels like Bella Hadid taking inspiration from the stars of that time.
‘90s streetwear was a rebellion against the bright, neon-coloured outfits of the ‘80s. People wore slouchy silhouettes and muted, brown lipsticks.
Celebs such as Jennifer Aniston, Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow set the trends, and next thing you know, everyone was sporting the “Rachel” haircut — inspired directly by Aniston’s character Rachel Green on Friends.
The trend cycle is considered a cycle for a reason, because what goes around comes back around. Over 20 years later, the ‘90s are back in the form of baggy outfits and neutral, matte makeup.
One scroll through TikTok’s FYP will show you women sporting heavily layered hairstyles reminiscent of the Rachel cut. People are rocking denim overalls and oversized leather jackets in the streets, so it’s safe to assume the ‘90s have definitely made a comeback.
So, we thought it was only fitting to take a look at some of the most memorable fashion moments from the ‘90s.
