The Australian fashion events officially kicked off for 2023, with last week’s PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival taking over the city and giving us a taste of what’s to come for the year, in fashion. The first major fashion event on the Australian calendar, the week saw emerging and established designers take to the various stages, runways and panels, with words of inspiration, fresh new designs and snippets of what to expect in the coming months.

One trending style we couldn’t look past was the three-piece suits for women. Gender neutrality has been creeping into high fashion for decades, but recently, we’ve been seeing a real appreciation for tailored pieces.

Arnsdorf showcased a beautiful three-piece charcoal grey suit, as part of the Envision runway on the second night of PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

It’s a simple but beautifully-cut a-line shape, and is made for a versatile piece. This is the kind of suit that would change entirely depending on who was wearing it. You could femme it up, with some coloured pumps and bling, or you could go for a more gender-neutral look, with loafers and minimal accessories.

In contrast to this, an Anna Cordell design walked down the Suit Up runway, with a much more specific look.

A cropped suit jacket, with matching suit pants and a longer shirt layered underneath, this three-piece suit boasts less versatility but gives more statement energy. But regardless, it definitely could be worn in many different styles and be flexible to diverse genders.

Then, there was this gorgeous three-piece from emerging designer Hyde & Stone. As one of the finalists of the David Jones Designer Award, the brand actually won the People’s Choice Award, which was chosen as the fave of DJ’s customers.

The three-piece was one of the stand-outs from their capsule collection. Made up of three individual pieces that work beautifully together but could also be worn separately, the suit pant, slouchy dinner jacket and overcoat was a seamless combination of masculine and feminine energy.

All these heart-eyeing three-piece suits on the runway have certainly inspired us to invest in some pieces for the upcoming cooler month. Undoubtedly a trend that we will continue to see into autumn and winter, here are three three-piece suits that would make fabulous additions to your winter wardrobe for 2023.

Farfetch

The Frankie Shop Gelso Suit

This Frankie Shop three-piece in a gorgeous musk pink, is more versatile than you’d think.

Made up of the Gelso Tailored Waistcoat ($315), the pleat-detail wide leg trousers ($356) and the Gelso oversized blazer in pink ($694), the suit could be dressed down with runners (as pictured) or with a pair of nude or pink heels.

Hyde & Stone

Dove Grey Three-Piece

Although this Hyde & Stone piece is pictured as a two-piece, if you pair the Natalia Blazer ($650), Bonita Vest ($340) and the Isla Trouser ($440) together, you have a gorgeous lightweight three-piece.

Perfect for the transitional seasonality of autumn to winter and then to spring, this three-piece is polished but casual statement outfit to carry you through every event.

Arnsdorf

Classic Black Three-Piece

If a classic black three-piece is what you’re after, you can’t go past this fine wool suit from fave Australian brand Arnsdorf.

Made up of Agnes Vest ($390), relaxed trouser ($490) and Joan jacket ($790), these are pieces that could be worn separately or together — and will be staples in your wardrobe for years to come.
