After years of wondering whether or not there would be a Doctor Strange sequel, the guessing is finally over. The upcoming instalment, titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is set to arrive in theatres in 2022, and it picks back up on the mayhem from Spider-Man: No Way Home after Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casts a spell that disrupts the multiverse. It also brings Strange and The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) from WandaVision together to get to the bottom of what the multiverse is all about.
The sequel was officially confirmed in July 2019 during Comic-Con, in which it was billed as a movie that would “play up the gothic” and “the horror.” The sequel film is part of the fourth phase of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. The third Marvel phase ended with the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame that released in April 2019, so Doctor Strange 2 is now shaping up to be one of the most important MCU films in phase four.
Ahead, dig into all the exciting details for the forthcoming sequel, including the returning cast, release date, and first teaser trailer.

Doctor Strange 2 Returning Cast
As if there was any doubt that Benedict Cumberbatch would be reprising his role as Doctor Strange, Variety confirmed the actor would be returning for the sequel film in October 2020. Other returning cast members include Benedict Wong as Strange’s sidekick, Wong; Rachel McAdams as Strange’s love interest, Dr. Christine Palmer; and Chiwetel Ejiofor reprising his role as Karl Mordo. Though this will be her first time in a Doctor Strange movie, Elizabeth Olsen is set to reprise her MCU role of The Scarlett Witch from WandaVision.

Doctor Strange 2 Director
Scott Derrickson, who wrote and directed 2016’s initial entry of Doctor Strange, was originally set to return for the sequel. However, in January 2020, Variety reported that Derrickson stepped down as director and confirmed his departure with a statement. “Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences,” he tweeted. “I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.” Sam Raimi has since stepped up as the new director for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
