Here’s Why “Wilderness” Is The Binge-Worthy Show You’ve Been Waiting For
POPSUGAR has partnered with Prime Video to bring you the must-watch shows and movies of the year.
There’s little in this world more gratifying than having a show to look forward to — and while the blow of the final episode is hard to relive, we crave it and seek it out every single time. I knew as soon as I saw the trailer for Prime Video’s Wilderness that it was going straight into the hall-of-fame. Not only did the teaser trailer give us a taste of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) with the inclusion of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” — which also happens to be the opening title track — but there’s something so deviously scrumptious about a good revenge plot.
The show gives us a love story — but it’s not your typical one. It’s a gripping tale, full of betrayal and revenge that unfolds in completely unexpected ways. You wouldn’t be faulted for settling into the series believing you’re about to experience a series of thrills driven by a scorned woman taking karma into her own hands — but the show will quickly take a sharp turn, throwing you straight into a complicated web that you’ll want to unravel episode by episode.
At the heart of Wilderness, we have Liv — portrayed brilliantly by Jenna Coleman. We soon learn that her background is tainted by a tough childhood filled with broken promises that ultimately left her with abandonment issues. Despite her rough upbringing, she persevered — building a career in journalism and developing a deep, vulnerable bond with her husband, Will.
Unfortunately, Liv’s trust and vulnerability is misplaced, because soon (spoiler alert) she discovers that Will has been having an affair. The betrayal ultimately drives her onto a path of revenge and self-discovery. Jenna Coleman’s performance as Liv is outstanding — you can absolutely feel the depth and complexity of the character while she navigates her devastation and subsequent reaction.
Besides Liv, there’s Will — played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, her charming, yet deeply flawed husband with a big secret. Ashley Benson delivers the role of Cara beautifully. Her character appears to have it all, but gets tangled up in Liv and Will’s drama — which leads to some wild twists and turns.
Then there’s Cara’s boyfriend, Garth, who’s played by Eric Balfour. Garth seems to be a genuinely nice human who has his love for Cara seriously tested when the truth starts to surface. And of course, there are a tonne of other characters with an equally talented cast who come together and form a thrilling ensemble — weaving a tale of intrigue, betrayal and suspense that’s guaranteed to keep you glued to the screen.
Wilderness doesn’t just feature an excellent cast — but it also features an incredible soundtrack that perfectly aligns with the series’ themes. It immerses viewers in the captivating and mysterious world — and we know how much a good score can accelerate the impact of a great story. It’s also a visual masterpiece, marked by stunning cinematography that flawlessly captures the breathtaking landscapes that are an ideal spot for Liv to carry out her revenge — while simultaneously providing us with a feast for the eyes.
Wilderness is a deliciously twisted thriller that’ll keep you guessing at every turn — and drive you to watch episode after episode until you’re shocked at what time it is. It’s a story of love, betrayal and the lengths people will go to in order to protect their secrets.
