Selena Gomez released her newest song, “Single Soon,” on Aug. 25. The new track – which is accompanied by a music video full of Easter eggs – describes Gomez on the edge of a breakup, wondering how she should pull the trigger and end the relationship.
Given the speculation about Gomez’s love life, fans are understandably wondering which one of Gomez’s exes the song could be about. Some are speculating that the song is about ex and fellow musician The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye. But Gomez actually addressed that rumor shortly after the song’s release. Here’s why fans thought the song was about The Weeknd, what Gomez had to say about that theory, and who else it could be about.
Is Selena Gomez’s “Single Soon” About The Weeknd?
There’s one specific lyric in the track that fans thought pointed to The Weeknd. Gomez sings, “I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.” The Weeknd has a track called “Save Your Tears,” so many fans assumed this was a purposeful reference to the “The Idol” star.
But on Aug. 27, Hollywood Life posted on Instagram about theories the song was about The Weeknd. Gomez quickly hopped in the comments and wrote, “Couldn’t be more false.” So who does that leave as likely suspects for the song’s inspiration?
Who Is “Single Soon” About?
Gomez hasn’t had a public long-term relationship in quite some time, but it’s possible the track was inspired by any one of her exes. Gomez revealed when she announced the track that the song was originally intended to go on her 2020 album, “Rare,” so it could be about any of her exes from before then. But it seems for Gomez, which person inspired the song is beside the point. She said of the song in an Aug. 26 post, “Thank you guys for all the love on Single Soon!!! It’s a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company… and it’s also really fun to dance to!”
