She Shared a Hobby With a First Daughter

The Biden grandchildren and the Obama daughters are already pretty close, after the eight years their families spent together during the Obama administration, but Maisy is particularly close to Sasha Obama. They’re right around the same age (Maisy is 20, Sasha is 19), and they played on the same basketball team together growing up – where their coach was President Barack Obama himself!

“There’s a lot of teams that were like, ‘This is unfair, they can’t have the president be their coach,’ but I mean, we won,” Maisy told NBC News. She also shared that, no matter what, her grandfather did his best to never miss a game. “It was always funny seeing him show up when I was like, ‘I think I just saw you on TV about 30 minutes ago, how did you just end up here?’ And he was like, ‘Don’t worry, I knew it was a big game today.'”

She Helped Break the News of Biden's Win

According to NBC News, it was Maisy, her siblings, and her cousins who got to break the news to their grandfather that he had officially been declared the winner of the election. While Biden and his wife, Jill, were outside on the patio, the official projection arrived, so the grandkids ran out to tell them. “Pop, Pop! We won!” they reportedly yelled.

She's Got a Fun Sense of Style

At the inauguration, Maisy showed off her fun, slightly eclectic sense of style. For the inauguration itself, she paired a sleek navy suit with sneakers. Then, for the evening events, she glammed it up a bit more in a patterned Rodarte dress – but, again, paired the fancy dress with statement sneakers!

She's Close to Her Family

The Biden granddaughters did a joint interview ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August 2020, where Maisy revealed how much they appreciate their grandfather’s frequent – and never perfunctory – calls. “He always calls with the same energy even after he’s just done 15 interviews in a row,” she said.

She's the Reason Her Grandfather Missed a Major Event

In 2019, when Maisy graduated from high school, her grandfather skipped the Iowa Democrats Hall of Fame Dinner to be there to celebrate her graduation (and her aunt’s birthday) with the whole family. “My granddaughter was graduating. It was my daughter’s birthday. I would skip inauguration for that,” he told reporters when asked about turning down the event.
