Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston as the God of Mischief, debuts on Disney+ in Australia on June 9th, 2021 and in a recent clip posted to Twitter it was confirmed that Thor’s sibling is, in fact, gender-fluid.
The character has had their sex questioned before, thanks to both the androgynous Asgardian’s shapeshifting abilities, and a reference to them by their father, Odin, as both his “son” and “daughter” in the 2014 comic book Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm.
Marvel has now confirmed what many fans have long suspected in the short clip — posted to the show’s official Twitter account — where we see a reference to their sex as “fluid” in a document at the end of the promo.
Loki follows the God of Mischief as they embark on a journey into the headquarters of the Time Variance Authority, a mysterious organisation that monitors time. Once there, they are enlisted by Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) to rectify the timeline they disturbed when using the Tesseract throughout The Infinity Saga. The ensuing adventure sends Loki hurtling through history.
While Loki is a standalone series, if you want to familiarise yourself with this particular version of the Marvel character, you can watch (or re-watch) 2011’s Thor, 2012’s The Avengers and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Due to the time travel aspect of the show, Loki and their counterparts traverse multiple timelines — which could explain why an earlier trailer for the series appeared to show Loki returning to Asgard which was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok. The theory is that they are visiting their former home in the past.
According to Gizmodo, the six-part series will likely air between 5pm and 6pm AEST on Wednesdays, starting on June 9 2021, with the finale landing on the platform on July 14.
