Ti West’s new horror movie “X” hits theatres on March 18, but it already has a prequel film waiting in the wings. During South by Southwest, West, who wrote, directed, and edited “X,” announced with A24 that a prequel to the movie, “Pearl,” has already been shot and is currently in post-production. Similar to “X,” the prequel stars Mia Goth, who will reprise her role from the film, and is helmed by West. The movie was shot in a secret location in New Zealand. Exclusive footage from the prequel will be shown in theaters alongside “X” and premiered at SXSW on March 13 with the film.
“X” stars Goth, Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, and Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) as a band of filmmakers in 1979 intent on making their own XXX film and becoming rich, successful, and famous. When they choose an old farm house inhabited by two mysterious old people, things go horribly awry. The movie blends together adult entertainment and a classic slasher film into one wild ride.
In “X,” Goth plays not only Maxine but also the old woman, Pearl, using prosthetics. “X” hints at some of Pearl’s difficult past, and the prequel will dive fully into her backstory and life as a young woman. West, when talking to the Los Angeles Times, compared the new film to a “demented” Disney movie. He also hinted that a third movie might join the series, saying, “I always felt like if you’re going to make a slasher movie, you have to make a bunch of sequels.”
The release date for “Pearl” hasn’t been announced, but we can’t wait to see what these horror lovers have in store for us next.
