Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” made its grand debut in September 2022, raking in $19 million at the box office during its opening weekend. The historical epic starring Viola Davis and John Boyega, which centered on the mighty all-women Agojie warrior unit, was made available for digital purchase back in November. And now, it’s finally streaming.
The blockbuster film received some love during the 2023 award season, snagging nominations at the SAG Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and BAFTA Awards. However, the film is at the center of the latest Oscars controversy after being snubbed from this year’s nominee pool. Despite having a star-studded cast and rave reviews, “The Woman King” – plus a few other 2022 films led by or centering Black people – were excluded from the 2023 Oscar nominations, sparking debate over the Academy’s progress toward diversity and inclusion.
On Feb. 7, Prince-Bythewood addressed the Academy’s decision in an as-told-to feature with The Hollywood Reporter and said, “Of course I’m disappointed. Who wouldn’t be? Especially because there was so much love for our film.” She added: “But the Academy made a very loud statement, and for me to stay quiet is to accept that statement. So I agreed to speak up, on behalf of Black women whose work has been dismissed in the past.”
Although “The Woman King” isn’t an Oscar-nominated film, it’s still considered a winner by those who saw and loved the film. In case you haven’t seen it yet, read ahead to find out where to stream the movie now.
