The Bold Type: Catch Up on Season 4 Before New Episodes Start Up This Week
The Bold Type doesn’t shy away from putting tough issues in the forefront, including rape, workplace bullying, LGBTQ+ equality, and breast cancer, all while tackling them in a smart and educational way. In season four, Jane (Katie Stevens) takes charge with her BRCA gene mutation diagnosis, Kat (Aisha Dee) challenges the higher-ups in Scarlet about shutting down a piece on conversion therapy, and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) goes after a job that she wants and deserves. The three close friends have each other’s backs through everything, including being Jane’s support system at the doctor and giving Sutton the best bachelorette celebration. And that’s exactly where season four’s midseason finale left us. The remaining eight episodes of the show are back soon, so before they air, let’s recap where we left off.

Kat Edison
Kat and Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) may have broken up, but they’re trying to be friends now. It doesn’t go well at first, but when they team up to try to bring down RJ Safford (Aidan Devine), the head of the publishing company, they realize they still work well together.
Kat makes it her mission to shed light on what RJ is doing behind the scenes, concerning discrimination. When he puts a stop to Adena publishing something on how harmful conversion therapy is, Kat realizes it’s because RJ supports a senator who supports conversion therapy. She gets ahold of his tax returns, proving he donates to the senator.
Kat releases RJ’s tax returns publicly, forcing him to step down from his position. Unfortunately, it also means Kat is out of a job for breaking the law.
Oliver Grayson
Sutton helps with a shoot for Scarlet with Alice Knight (Raven-Symoné) and leads her to believe that she’s an official Scarlet stylist. When Alice asks Sutton to style her for another event, Sutton is thrilled, because all she wants is to be promoted to stylist at the magazine. Thinking this freelance assignment will help put her on the map, she takes it, only to let Alice down when she finds out Sutton isn’t really a stylist, but a wannabe.
Alice calls Oliver, extremely angry that he oversees someone who would lie about her work, and Oliver ices Sutton out for days. He won’t talk to her beyond what he absolutely has to at work, but he eventually warms up to her when Sutton wins Alice over and grows her Instagram following, proving she’s an asset to the Scarlet team. In the end, he convinces Jacqueline that Sutton deserves the stylist job. He tries to offer Sutton the job at the same time she tells him she’s moving to San Francisco, so he ends up not telling her. But he can’t let her leave without knowing all the information, so he shows up at Jane’s apartment the night before the wedding with business cards with Sutton’s married name and stylist title so she can decide for herself if she wants to leave. He also officiates Sutton and Richard’s wedding for them.
Jacqueline Carlyle
Jacqueline’s (Melora Hardin) marriage with Ian (Gildart Jackson) hits a rough patch. The two aren’t happy, so they decide to take some time apart. Ian leaves for a work trip, and in the meantime, Jacqueline links up with former flame Miles (Scott Cohen). And though the two have their fun for awhile, Ian ends up coming home to seemingly work things out.
Jacqueline also fights for her job at Scarlet after the higher-ups tried to turn the whole brand digital and pinch her out of the company. After the reins were handed to Patrick (Peter Vack), Jacqueline battled back and re-took over Scarlet on a mission to make it a more inclusive and female-focused brand that tackles real issues.
Jane Sloan
Jane’s been a wreck since finding out her boyfriend, Ryan, cheated on her while on his book tour. He initially tells her that all he did was kiss another woman, but she eventually finds out he actually slept with her. They keep trying to move past it and make things work, but ultimately Jane ends the relationship.
Jane instead throws all her focus into starting her own vertical on Scarlet and getting a double mastectomy to get ahead of her BRCA gene mutation diagnosis.
Sutton Brady
Sutton and her fiancé, Richard Hunter (Sam Page), have been dealing with a long-distance relationship since Richard relocated to San Francisco for a job. After Sutton experiences mass fallout with Oliver due to her trying to become a stylist and influencer, she decides she and Richard should just get married right away so she can move out to San Francisco to be with him.
Thinking she’ll never move up the ranks at Scarlet, Sutton pushes the wedding forward, but after Oliver convinces Jacqueline to create a stylist position just for Sutton at Scarlet, Sutton’s torn on what to do. She and Richard have a heart-to-heart right before walking down the aisle, and Sutton decides she needs to stay in New York and take this job and she and Richard will continue a long-distance relationship for the foreseeable future.
