Step aside, we have a new era incoming, and no, we were NOT ready for this! Just when we thought we had Taylor Swift‘s next move all figured out — cue “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” hype — she slyly pulled the rug out from under us at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Swift not only snagged her 13th Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album but also left fans around the globe in shock as she dropped the bombshell news of a completely unexpected project: a brand new album titled “The Tortured Poets Department”.
As she took the stage to accept the award, Swift began her acceptance speech with a playful nod to her lucky number.
“This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that,” she joked, setting the stage for the bombshell announcement. Swift — who is known for her clever and strategic marketing moves and Easter Eggs that hint at future projects — has been keeping the news under wraps for the past two years.
“The Tortured Poets Department”, April 19
“I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand-new album comes out April 19th, it’s called ‘The Tortured Poets Department’,” she said.
The revelation has ignited a frenzy on social media. Swift’s Instagram post, which went live immediately after her live, on stage announcement, features the album’s artwork. Accompanying the visual teaser is a handwritten note, which gives fans with a glimpse into the poetic depths of the upcoming album.
She also posted a photo of a handwritten note that reads, “And so I enter into evidence / My tarnished coat of arms / My muses, acquired like bruises / My talismans and charms / The tick, tick, tick of love bombs / My veins of pitch black ink / All’s fair in love and poetry…” She signed off the poem (or lyrics) with, “Sincerely, The Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department.”
Taylor Swift’s ability to keep us on our toes, her knack for reinvention, and her unmatched talent have once again solidified her as the queen of surprises.
