Well, it seems Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s rumored whirlwind romance wasn’t built to last after all. On June 5, Entertainment Tonight confirmed that the pair, who had been swarmed with dating speculation since early May, have broken up. “Taylor and Matty broke up. They are both extremely busy and realized they’re not really compatible with each other,” a source told the outlet, adding, “Taylor’s friends want what’s best for her and aren’t shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship.”
TMZ was the first to break the news. Reps for the two stars did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s requests for comment.
News of Swift and Healy’s reported relationship was first made public by The Sun on May 3, with a source close to Swift reportedly saying, “She and Matty are madly in love.” They added, “It’s super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost ten years ago but timings just didn’t work out.”
Though the pair were only romantically linked for a month, there were plenty of reported sightings that suggested the two were, indeed, dating. Two days after The Sun’s report, Healy was spotted at one of the Nashville stops of Swift’s Eras tour, per videos and photos that swirled on social media. The following day, The 1975’s lead singer surprised Swift’s fans during another Nashville show by hitting the stage with Phoebe Bridgers during her opening set, per People.
Dating rumors continued on May 16 after Swift and Healy were photographed leaving the Electric Lady studio in New York City, and they hit a fever pitch on May 25 when an onlooker told People they spotted the alleged couple engaging in some PDA at the members-only venue Zero Bond in NYC. “Taylor and Matty were kissing,” the source claimed. Reps for Swift did not respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment at the time, while Healy’s reps could not be reached.
Neither Swift nor Healy ever directly addressed their speculation, but the latter poked fun at it on May 27 while performing with his band during BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in Dundee, Scotland. “Is it all a bit? Is it sincere? Will he ever address it?” he said to the crowd, adding, “All of these questions and more will be ignored in the next hour. Ladies and gentlemen, this is The 1975.”
The singers’ history goes way back to 2016 when Healy opened up about how speculation surrounding him and Swift back then made him certain he would never date her. “I feel like I’m not very good at relationships,” Healy told Q Magazine (via NME) in March 2016, adding that he was afraid of just becoming “Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.” “The reason I mention that is because if I had [properly] gone out with Taylor Swift the first thing, I would’ve [thought], ‘F*cking hell! I am NOT being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.'” He then admitted, “That’s also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing.”
Back in January, Swift made a surprise appearance at a The 1975 concert in London, also adding fuel to her and Healy’s dating rumors once they were reported.
Swift’s reported breakup with Healy comes nearly two months after news of her split with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn broke on April 8. The two were together for six years and lived in London before breaking up. Previously, Swift has also been linked to stars like Harry Styles, Calvin Harris, and Tom Hiddleston. Healy, meanwhile, reportedly dated celebrities like Halsey, Gabriella Brooks, and FKA Twigs.
