“Euphoria” isn’t for the faint of heart . . . or for the dads and granddads of the show’s actors. During her appearance on “Sunday Today With Willie Geist,” Sydney Sweeney shared that her father and grandfather attempted to watch her hit HBO show without knowing what it was about. As you can imagine, their watch party didn’t last long once they realized just how graphic the show is in its depiction of sexual situations and drug use.
“My mom visited me on set at the time, so she knew the story and I talked to her a lot about it – my dad didn’t,” the actor revealed. “Yeah, I didn’t prepare my dad. At all.”
Sweeney continued, “I mean, how do you bring it up in conversation? And also, when I talk to my dad, it’s usually not about work. We talk, like, father-daughter conversations. He decided he was going to watch it, without telling me, with his parents.”
“Euphoria” quickly proved to be too much for her father and grandfather, but her grandmother became a fan. “My dad and my grandpa turned it off and walked out,” Sweeney said. “But my grandma is a big supporter of mine. She’s a big fan of mine. Actually, I bring her, usually, all over the world to my different sets, and I make her an extra.”
Sweeney’s parents and grandparents aren’t the only members of her family who have tuned into the dark teen drama. In 2019, the “Reality” actor told POPSUGAR at POPSUGAR Play/Ground, “My cousins are watching it with my aunts and uncles, which is a very scary thing,” Sweeney said. She continued, “When I talked to my aunts and uncles and I was like, ‘So, what’d you think?’ they gave me a one-word answer: ‘interesting.'”
To no one’s surprise, however, the show’s more mature and modern topics resonated with her cousins. She added, “When I talked to my cousins, who are in their 20s and around my age, they were like, ‘That is the most authentic show we’ve ever seen on TV representing our age.'”
“Euphoria” has been renewed for a third season, but it’s unclear when the new season will premiere.
