Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell spent quite a bit of time in Australia while filming their new rom-com “Anyone But You“. But as it turns out, filming Down Under has its fair share of dangers. Glen recalled his hair-raising experience while filming with Sweeney, and it turns out, the real danger wasn’t just the wildlife.
The duo opened up about their wild adventures at the New York premiere, where talk naturally turned to the memorable scene involving a spider and Powell’s pants. Oh, and let’s just make it known that Powell is butt-naked in this particular scene.
“You just have to grip it and rip it on a scene like that. You know you’re not going to leave that filming day looking cool, so you just have to embrace it,” Powell shared, chuckling about his less-than-graceful, cliffside disrobing.
“Taking your clothes off on the side of a cliff in a hurry is not safe,” he added. “Nobody talks about that safety issue on set, where I almost died falling off a cliff taking my pants off too fast. But it’s a really fun scene, so it was all worth it.”
Sydney Sweeney’s Huntsman Encounter
Sweeney had her share of challenges too, courtesy of her eight-legged co-star. While Powell was busy avoiding a potential cliff dive, Sweeney found herself getting more intimate than she bargained for with the spider that had been nestled in Powell’s shorts.
“There’s the spider itself, which actually bit me, and that was a whole thing,” Sweeney recalled. “And then we have the part of Glen bending over and me checking to see if there are more spiders.”
Sweeney said it took half a day to film the spider scene, adding, “I’m very acquainted with Glen now”.
The film, shot in Sydney, follows the story of Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell). They look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold — until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.
Sydney and Glen Actually Jumped in Shark-Infested Waters for Sydney Harbour Scenes
Filming in Sydney Harbour for “Anyone But You” was also no walk in the park. Director Will Gluck revealed the production’s struggle to secure the iconic location due to the area’s shark-infested waters.
“A big part of the movie was filmed in Sydney Harbour on a boat with them floating on a buoy in the middle of the harbour at night,” Gluck told EW. However, due to safety concerns, they had to shoot with a shark tank surrounding actors during water scenes.
“Every time an actor or stunt double filmed in the water, they had to do so with a huge shark tank around it,” Gluck added. This added an element of tension to the already challenging night shoots, especially when the clock struck 3am.
Shark consultants were brought in to guide the production on best practices, revealing that the more activity in the area, the more sharks it attracted. As scenes became more dynamic, the number of sharks they had to contend with increased. Despite the risks, Gluck assures that no actors (or sharks) were harmed in the making of “Anyone But You.”
