There’ve been movies about killer sharks, bears, snakes, and crocodiles, but never in my 29 years of life could I have predicted a horror flick revolving around a murderous sloth. This bizarre concept is now a reality, and it’s called – wait for it – “Slotherhouse.”
Set to be released later this month, the Gravitas Ventures movie revolves around a college senior named Emily Young (Lisa Ambalavanar), who adopts a pet sloth to help secure election as president of her sorority, Sigma Lambda Theta (SLTH). The seemingly innocent mammal, which they name Alpha, becomes SLTH’s new mascot, but things take a turn when it starts killing students in the sorority house. That’s right – Alpha isn’t your average tree-hugging sloth, but rather a ruthless collegiate murderer.
The “Slotherhouse” trailer, which dropped on Aug. 2, is a wild ride from start to finish. It opens with a sorority member hearing something move in the shower behind her. Upon pulling back the curtain, she lets out a blood-curdling scream and Alpha stabs her in the face with its razor-sharp claws. A series of grisly attacks ensue, all connected back to the sloth. “It’s a slotherhouse!” a character quips while standing beside one of Alpha’s disheveled victims.
Similar to “Cocaine Bear” and that Winnie the Pooh slasher, “Slotherhouse” fuses horror with absurdist humor, and, against all odds, many folks are on board. “Why am I for the first time ever invested into a movie trailer and it’s one with a killer sloth,” one person tweeted, while another added, “Give this all the awards. I’m all in on a killer sloth!” If anything, the movie proves there are no bounds when it comes to dreaming up cinematic villains. What’s next? A koala on a kill streak? A llama with poisonous spit? A sea otter with a craving for human flesh?
If your curiosity is piqued by Alpha’s reign of terror, read ahead for everything you need to know about “Slotherhouse,” including the trailer, cast, and release date.
