We have “Only Murders in the Building” to thank for one of our favorite friendship trios in Hollywood. Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short star in the Hulu series as Mabel Mora, Charles-Haden Savage, and Oliver Putnam respectively, three strangers who team up to solve a string of murders in their Upper West Side apartment building. Ever since the show debuted in 2021, the costars have formed a real-life bond as deep as the one their characters share on screen. And now that the show has been renewed for a fourth season revolving around yet another mysterious death at the Arconia, we can expect even more fun behind-the-scenes moments to come from the dynamic trio.
Martin, 78, and Short, 73, have been pals for decades, collaborating on several memorable films through the years, including the Father of the Bride series. Gomez, 31, may have seemed an unlikely addition to the mix at first, but she fits right in, egging on their wacky hijinks and always cracking jokes about their age gap. During a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” appearance in 2022, Gomez had nothing but positive things to say about working with Martin and Short, sharing, “I could not be luckier to be surrounded by these two fools. They are so much fun to be around, and I’ve learned so much from them.” The learning has gone both ways, too – Gomez previously discussed teaching her costars the lyrics of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” on set. Oh, to be a fly on that wall.
Gomez, Martin, and Short’s bond isn’t just evident in their onscreen chemistry. The trio have made numerous public appearances together – from attending “Only Murders in the Building” season premieres to walking the red carpet at award shows – and they always look like they’re genuinely having the best time. Gomez also occasionally shares sweet peeks into their friendship on social media by trolling her costars on TikTok and posting cute photos captured between filming scenes. They’ve even given themselves a nickname: “The OGs.” (Gomez had to explain the abbreviation to them at length before it stuck.)
To celebrate our favorite partners in crime (solving), we’re taking a look back at Gomez, Martin, and Short’s friendship highlights ahead, from late-night interviews to funny TikToks.
