After three years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are returning to the Invictus Games. On April 11, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed that the duchess will be in attendance for the beginning of the international sports competition, which honours wounded service members and veterans. Harry launched the seven-day sporting event back in September 2014, and this year’s games will take place in The Hague, Netherlands, from April 16 to 22. The 2022 event will be featured in Harry and Markle’s first Netflix series, “Heart of Invictus.” The docuseries, which doesn’t have a premiere date yet, will follow athletes as they prepare for the competition.
“Since the very first Invictus Games back in 2014, we knew that each competitor would contribute in their own exceptional way to a mosaic of resilience, determination, and resolve,” Harry said in a statement on Archewell’s website. “This series will give communities around the world a window into the moving and uplifting stories of these competitors on their path to the Netherlands next year. As Archewell Productions’ first series with Netflix, in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead or prouder of the Invictus community for continuously inspiring global healing, human potential and continued service.”
The Invictus Games are near and dear to the Sussexes. After serving in Afghanistan, Harry was inspired by the Warrior Games during a trip to the United States in 2013. As a result, he made it his mission to create an event similar to it that used sports to help aid the physical, psychological, and social recovery of active-duty soldiers and veterans.
The Invictus Games are also where Harry and Markle first met. In May 2016, Harry was launching the 2017 event in Toronto, where Markle just so happened to be filming her show “Suits.” After striking up a romance, the two made their first public appearance as a couple at the sports competition in 2017. Since then, Markle has continued to support her husband at the yearly event.
